24PetWatch
« on: January 04, 2010, 11:44:31 PM »
One of my dogs has a 10-digit microchip from 24petwatch. As far as I can tell this is the same technology as HomeAgain, which I know people have had success with at Heathrow.

Has anyone successfully got their pet through the process at Heathrow with a 24petwatch chip without having to buy a reader?

thanks, Andy

You could go to your vet and ask them to scan it using a Homeagain scanner.  If they can, then the staff at Heathrow should be able to as well.
But to get a better answer,  I would call DEFRA - they are very helpful.

My dog has a 24petwatch chip, so if you could post your findings, I'd be curious to know. Thanks!

If you purchase a scanner it would be much appreciated if you could let us know the exact make and model. Thanks!

I don't understand why a vet would microchip animals when they don't have a scanner for the chips they are using. How do they know the procedure was successful? I would find another vet.

you tell me andy.....i didnt quite understand that and it rather pissed me off......im purchasing a scanner for safetys sake........i went to another vet that had a universal scanner and could read it.......i could have put in the cheap chip and bought the cheap scanner.......i dont think its something she did intentionally.....i just feel like she didnt think before doing......i requested the iso chips and she got them......id like to use her as she is listed as usda certified but that doesnt mean they know what to do.......she took all thousands of sheets of papers (lol) i sent her and is reading all front to back.......but im really upset about the scanner.....the chips cost enough as it was but now im faced with scanner cost.......i swear this pet scheme is so stressful......once we get moved and all is well my husband to be owes me many many pints from the local pub......

A friend of mine thought she was going to have to buy a scanner (I dont know which brand she was after) and was actually able to rent it.  You may want to look into that as I am sure its cheaper.

This one?

http://www.classypets.com/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CPTS&Product_Code=MICRO012&Category_Code=PTSMICRO

I don't think so because it says:

Quote
reads 15 digit microchips operating at 134.2 kHz

but my 24PetWatch chip has only 10 digits.

That is the only $119 scanner I can see. Can you please post a link?

My suspicion is that there are two types of 24PetWatch chips, 10-digit non-ISO that can be read by a HomeAgain scanner, and 15-digit ISO chips that can perhaps be read by this $119 scanner. In which case buying the scanner is possibly unnecessary...

If anyone can clarify this pet microchip mess it would be much appreciated...

Andy

my 24petwatch has 15 digits.......when i called petwatch they told me i needed one that would read 134.2 K....they never ask me the number-it seemed as though that was standard.....let me ask you this......both my chips start out with 98200 which makes mine 15 digit.....is this possibly the case with yours.......i have to buy the scanner for my vet doesnt have one........id rather be safe than sorry.........the pic you have posted-yes that is the one im gonna buy........steff

No. Mine starts with 0A1.

So that confirms it - 24PetWatch uses two different types of microchips. Wonderful.
