I've never been, but we're going in February (and again in May), so hopefully I'll have some recommendations for you when we get back! We're staying with friends, so no hotel recommendations, but I'm sure we'll eat at some tasty restaurants!

I stayed in a youth hostel last time I went and with a friend another time, so no hotel recommendations, but Las Ramblas area is sort of the cool area to stay. That's where my hostel was and there were winding back streets with lots of residents and hotels, plus you can walk to las Ramblas which is sort of the main high street with entertainment, shopping etc (not nec. high end if I recall, but it's been a long time). Near La Sagrada Familia church might also be nice or the area around Gaudi's houses/museums near El Corte Inglés. I'm at work right now and can't remember what the area's called. That's more downtown-ish. Depends on your tastes. I LOVE Barcelona. It's a great city. There are some nice restaurants down by the dock area. Kinda classy/upscale. I just had a beer at the cafe when I went so I can't speak for the food. The area around El Corte Inglés also has nice cafes/bars with tapas, etc. If you've been to Paris, that's the same vibe I get in Barcelona. Very pretty city with lots to see and do! :) Have fun!!

Market Hotel (near Mercat de Sant Antoni) three times

http://www.markethotel.com.es/

Banys Orientals (Carrer de l'Argenteria) twice

http://www.hotelbanysorientals.com/

Both very good. Banys Orientals is in the Barri Gotic and more central, Market is on the edge of Eixample and is more laid back

Both have good restaurants attached, but it's fun to just walk about and see what takes your fancy. Watch out for pickpckets and bag snatchers around the big streets, esp. las Ramblas!!!

We went down last spring and stayed at a hotel on the beach near the Marina. All the major chains are there, plus the more Spanish hotels. We were in the Las Ramblas area a few evenings and did a lot of sightseeing. No problems.

I found the hotel on Hotels.com. They're all there in all price ranges. The Marina area is nice. Good restaurants, a small casino which we went into to see. The restaurants at the Marina were great.

We drove from Barcelona all over the Northern part of the country and had a great time.
