Is it okay to bring...
« on: January 06, 2010, 04:00:52 PM »
I'm on vacation in the US right now, and stocking up on my beloved grape jam and a1 sauce. ;D I know all of that is fine. But is it okay to bring corn tortillas? I freeze them and take them out as needed, so they would last me a very long time. I'm just not sure if that is acceptable to bring through customs?

The corn tortillas should be OK if they're sealed in plastic.  I'd strongly recommend making sure that the wedding cake is OK to bring, since it's perishable and unsealed.  They're quite strict about what you can and can't bring into the EU, and a wedding cake would be a heartbreaking thing to have taken away.

My Mom has brought cookies and things like that and never had a problem.  It seems like it should be alright.

When it comes to bringing items through checkpoints, we've seen just about everything. Traveling with food or gifts is an even bigger challenge. Everyone has favorite foods from home that they want to bring to holiday dinners, or items from their destination that they want to bring back home.

Not sure about what you can and can't bring through the checkpoint? Here's a list of liquid, aerosol and gel items that you should put in your checked bag, ship ahead, or leave at home.

    * Cranberry sauce
    * Cologne
    * Creamy dips and spreads
      (cheeses, peanut butter, etc.)
    * Gift baskets with food items
      (salsa, jams and salad dressings)
    * Gravy
    * Jams
    * Jellies
    * Lotions

    * Maple syrup
    * Oils and vinegars
    * Perfume
    * Salad dressing
    * Salsa
    * Sauces
    * Snowglobes
    * Soups
    * Wine, liquor and beer

Note: You can bring pies and cakes through the security checkpoint, but please be advised that they are subject to additional screening.

I will pack the cake, it is wrapped in foil and a Styrofoam small cooler thing ;-)

I recommend calling to check this with some kind of official... I don't really know who to call, but as hystorienne said, that would be a horrible thing to have taken away.

The Food Standards Agency has an FAQ on what foods you can bring into the UK. One of the questions is regarding bringing in wedding cake:

I'm getting married in the Caribbean. Can I bring my wedding cake back to the UK?

You shouldn't have any problems bringing your wedding cake back to the UK from the Caribbean, as long as it doesn't contain fresh cream. Although a cake can contain ingredients of animal origin, such as eggs, butter, milk and suet (which are usually restricted from countries outside the European Union), generally you would be allowed to bring your cake into the country.

Also see: http://dontbringmeback.direct.gov.uk/index.html  and http://www.food.gov.uk/foodindustry/imports/imports_advice/personal_imp/ for more info about bringing food into the UK.

Well you could drain the liquid out and replace it with explosives so when you throw it, it will go off?

Heck if I know - I shipped the one Xmas one I kept

Too funny, Zoyabean!  It was just odd seeing it in a list of mostly food items--and so very random!

Just FYI we got called off the plane once after we were seated, unpacked and seat belts buckled. They demanded for us to bring all our luggage back to the airport with us. Needless to say I was scared we had done something.Once we got back to the terminal they stated we had to throw away the Styrofoam container we had with us. I unpacked some food items and handed it to the airline employee. He said "No, you need to dispose of it yourself". So i walked over to the trash and threw it away. Then they allowed us to get back on the plane.  We made it through security and everything.

Weird.  Is styrofoam petroleum-based?
