Wedding Videos
« on: January 11, 2010, 01:49:38 PM »
I just read through four pages of posts on the thread "How much did you pay for your wedding"  Several people actually listed the cost of each item and some just listed the total cost.  Items listed included such things as wedding dress, rings, honeymoon, DJ and photographer.  In all of those four pages, I didn't see a single post that mentioned a videographer.

In my past life in the states, I was a wedding videographer.  I still do editing of high end weddings for a videographer in the states but since moving here, I no longer shoot my own events.
So many people tend to think of wedding videos as a documentary of the day that could be quite boring.  The truth of it though is quite different, depending on the videographer you choose.  I actually produce a very stylized short form edit that is much like a music video.  They seem to be quite popular among the higher end brides in southern California.

I am just wondering what the overall perception of wedding video is among the posters here
and what kind of value you may or may not place on video.  Has anyone here ever viewed a wedding video that was produced more as visual entertainment than a documentary event that may only be viewed once or twice?

It just wasn't something we were interested in, to be honest. I don't know that I've ever thought of wedding videos as boring, maybe more just a bit cheesy. And sort of not essential. We had one of my in-laws' friends use our camcorder just for fun - and the fact that it's completely not professional and that he had no idea what he was doing most of the time is what makes it so entertaining and precious to us!  :D

We had one as part of our wedding package.  It's basically just the ceremony, as it happened, no editing.  We've shown it once or twice since there were lots of people who weren't able to attend the actual wedding, like DH's elderly granny.  But it's not really the sort of thing that we will sit down and watch on a regular basis.  Maybe on milestone anniversaries or something.  DH played around with it and made copies for our parents as well, but honestly, if I had been able to opt out of having it, I probably would have.

I don't think I've ever watched anyone's wedding video.  Seems like a kind of personal thing... It wouldn't even occur to me to ask.

If I were getting married, it would probably be on a tight budget, and a video just wouldn't be something that I would value enough to pay for.

We didn't have a wedding video done.  Neither one of us thought we'd ever sit down and watch one, and I didn't want to have to deal with wireless mics or lights or having a videographer faffing about during the ceremony.  Plus, I'm an editor, and I can guarantee I'd have found faults with the editing of the resulting wedding video. :)

That said, after looking at the demos on your website, I'd be interested to see what your wedding videos look like.

We didn't have a videographer, one: because I always thought it might be a bit cheesy and two: because I found it cheesy I didn't want the expense. That being said, I do kind of regret now that we don't have a video. It all goes so fast and I would love to hear what my pastor said about us again. She's a good friend of mine, so it was very personal to us.

I meant to say too, my friends have a video of their wedding and it's over at her MIL's house. She said she's probably watched it twice in her whole life, but her 4 year old daughter watches it pretty much twice a day, everyday!  ;D

We had a civil service in the UK and there were no videocameras allowed during the actual ceremony. So, even if we had had a video, it wouldn't have included that.  :-\\\\

I assume you looked at my baby videos.  Those are all pretty much documentary style.  I don't try to get very creative with those.  My wedding videos are much different.  I'd love to show you some of my editing.  However, they are usually about 30 minutes long and as an editor you must know that equates to a HUGE file.  I am encoding a segment of a wedding I did, (actually it was the Sangeet celebration the night before).  I can't post it publicly because as I said before, I edit someone else's weddings.  Without his permission, I can not make it public.  I will however share a link with you if you'd like.

The baby videos were the ones I saw, and I liked the style of them.  You did a good job of letting the pictures tell the story without a ton of effects or flashy editing.

I will however share a link with you if you'd like.

Yes, please.

I have had outdoor wedding projects that also had water features.  Without mic'ing the groom, it's always difficult to capture good audio.  So many people don't realize the importance that clean audio plays in a good video.  There are things you can do to lessen the sound of the water.  Unfortunately, it will usually result in a change to the voices as well.  It could sound better but the water can not be eliminated.
