Musicians show your faces!
« on: January 12, 2010, 09:48:42 PM »
Hi past, present, future, wannabe, fellow musicians, instrumentalists, singers, djs, producers, etc-
It pops up often around that someone is a musician, so roll call please!  :)

Me! I play trombone in a few bands and sing in a few choral groups-
I am a hack fiddle player, even worse on the guitar, and desperately trying to raise some funds for a piano again back in my life.

Way back when I played piano. Then I had a big fat solo in the church choir when I premiered as 'The Angel' in the Christmas musical. I started playing clarinet in 4th grade and played in symphonic/concert bands all through college. I was also in the 'pit' in the high school marching band which means I played the xylophone, marimba, percussion, etc. I actually miss that the most, but probably because it's totally not accessible to me anymore. My clarinet is at my parent's and I will still play it occasionally. I would LOVE to play with a group. I also sang various school and church choirs throughout my school years and I played in percussion ensemble.

If I could afford it, I would be taking violin lessons right now.

*waves* I'm a singer- been singing in choirs since I was nine years old, studied voice (classical/opera) privately for years in high school and college, and am currently in a great choir which I love. Can play piano enough to get by, but that's about it on the instrumental front.

I don't play any more, but I played flute and bassoon for years.  I LOVED playing the bassoon, and I really miss it!

I'm a music teacher. :) I sing opera and all other sorts. And I play the violin, guitar, piano, clarinet, and a slew of other instruments (but the others, only well enough to teach a beginner.)
Finally living with my Husband in London after 6 1/2 years together but apart... and loving my life!

Yay phatbbeetle--thanks for starting this thread!  :D

I play harp--not the huge concert type, but what's commonly called a folk or lever harp.  I play Irish tunes (some Scottish).  I've been playing for about 12 years.  I also play Irish fiddle, for about 7 years.  I'm more accomplished on the harp, but I've got loads of tunes on the fiddle, too.

As a child I had piano lessons for a couple years but quit.  (I liked playing the piano, but hated the lessons and the stupid baby pieces I had to learn).  Then a few years later I played violin and viola (they ran out of violins, so put me on viola and I loved it!) in grade school for a couple years.  I liked it much better, but for some reason I didn't continue with it.

Fast forward more than 20 years and I obsessed about learning Celtic harp for 2 years until I found a teacher.  When I did my life changed forever.  I took lessons every Saturday for more than 10 years, first starting on the harp, then adding the fiddle (same teacher).  I went to Northern Ireland for a week-long harp workshop, and played in Irish sessions in Philadelphia.

I started doing gigs almost right away--with only a half a dozen tunes under my belt! (against my better judgement, but it was fine).  I busked on South Street, and even did a summer at the PA Renaissance Faire with another harper friend (those dresses are *hot* in the summer!)  I was in a band with my ex and a friend, now my present hubby and I play together and have gotten a few gigs so far in the UK.

I was (was being the operative word) a classically trained pianist. I had lessons from the age of 3 to 20 (not my choice, though my parents say otherwise). I haven't properly played in 15 years. But I do on occasion for special events -- my brother has asked me to play & sing with his garage band a few times.

I used to sing as well, starting in church choir at age 6 until 24 and various school groups (vocal jazz, musicals, madrigals etc) & competed internationally as well. Now it's just for pleasure to my daughter, in the shower or in the car. (so you can understand how watching x-factor & American Idol makes me cringe).

I do miss the creativity, pleasure and pride that I used to get from playing & performing. It's just another of the few things that I gave up when I became an adult. I was good at it but not sensational and it wasn't something that would ever be considered 'career material' like my parents always told me. But, I do miss it very, very much as I've not touched a piano or a mic in nearly 10 years.

WebyJ, what about getting a keyboard (electronic) so you could get back into playing?

Hey, if there is anyone who plays anything and is in the Leeds area or wouldn't mind travelling to Leeds (I don't drive, I guess I could bus or train it to wherever you are) and would like to play together just for fun, please let me know!

My husband has one (it's a US power source so I'd have to drag out the transformer and then hook it up to the stereo system), but I honestly feel like I've forgotten how to play...plus it's not a practical thing when you have a small child. I still have my piano in the States and my mom is storing it for me so when we move back in the next year or so we'll have it moved back into our house there.

Oh, didn't realize you were moving back to the US!  So you will be reunited with your piano in the near future.  I'm sure once you get back into it, it will come back to you--with a bit of practice.  :)

Definitely!
Plus, now you won't have the pressure to execute difficult pieces- you can play for you!

Thanks for popping out musicians, come out, come out whereever you- I know there's more of you!

Does anyone have any shows or gigs or performances, etc coming up?

I'm very slowly learning guitar at the moment, my DB started last year (after playing as a child) and he's already really good, me less so :( I love it though and that's the point! He got some cool fx pedals for xmas. I brought the guitar (it's a fender 50s style strat with texas special pick ups) back from Japan, it's gorgeous. We also have a cheaper acoustic :)

I played piano as a child and as soon as we move I'm hoping to get a decent velocity sensitive keyboard/synth, possibly something vintage from Korg to pick it up again :)

I've also been playing WAY too much rock band drums, and really love it. That's on our list to buy as soon as we get to the US, as my DB played drums all through high school and was in a garage band :)

But if I could have any instrument right now, it would be a violin, I'd love to learn to play...but it sort of intimidates me, I think it looks like it needs lessons which I can't afford right now :(

I sang in the choir in high school (like Weby J I did musicals & madrigals in addition to the main choir), and was in a group that got to perform in China in 1987.

Then I sang in a garage band in the mid-90s.  We did a lot of grunge covers (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, etc), and the comment we got most often was "Hey, you guys don't suck!"   ;D

I miss being in a band, but finding a group of guys to play covers in a pub is harder than you'd think.  Everyone wants to be famous.  :)

I'm so not a musician, but I did have piano lessons as a child and wish I could pick it up again. Now if only I had room for a piano!

And I also played lead glockenspiel in a marching band for years!
