American Idol 2010 (Season 9)
« on: January 13, 2010, 10:45:35 AM »
Just found out that the new season of American Idol is starting in the UK tonight on ITV2, 7.30-9.30pm :).

I haven't watched it in a couple of years (not since 2008), but I'm gonna try to watch this season if I can.

I usually have to sit through some of this every year because Mr A likes it, especially the auditions.  I usually don't mind it, even though I think it gets a bit samey, but WTF?  Victoria Beckham is so friggen annoying.  All through the episode last night she was making those weird, posey praying mantis-like faces at the camera.  When a singer was good, it looked like there was a total disconnect between what was going on and Posh's brain.  She just looked like she was either thinking of a way to make sure the camera got her most angular side or thinking really mean thoughts and had to bite her tongue.  What an odd, painful woman.

I also think somebody should have told her that she was on American Idol, and not Project Runway.  Until the very end of the show, all of her comments had to do with a person's style, looks or presence. Worst "celebrity" judge, by a mile IMO.

I have to admit that, as much as I love the show, I'm not a huge fan of the auditions.  Four hours of watching people embarrass themselves with only a few minutes of genuine talent mixed in gets very tiresome.  I've only managed to watch five minutes of it this week and will skim through the rest this weekend, I guess.

Roll on Hollywood Week!

Praying Mantis!! That's perfect!! She's just not a very bright woman, is she?

I can't watch the auditions anymore. The ability to see one decent one in the sea of crap they populate it with isn't worth it for me. It's just too painful.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

These initial auditions are my favorite. I stop watching once it gets to Hollywood. I think it's all fixed anyway.

I like the auditions too, but they can get a bit repetitive sometimes.  One of the "rejects" in the Boston auditions is the daughter of a family friend back home, so I had to watch that one.  She was bad, but not really laughable, sort of in a pitiful way.  I know she is autistic and a bit socially awkward. She goes to the auditions every year, so I am sure the producers picked her out as one of the bad people with a back story and put her through to the judges.  At least she got to meet Simon and the others.

I know there is one specific song they pick each day for all the hopefuls to sing to the lesser judges (the ones that pick who goes through to Simon et al), and I think that's one of the reasons we hear so many of the same ones.  Another reason, of course, being that most of these people don't know any music that isn't played on Top 40 radio. :P
