We just got back to the UK from our holiday trip to visit family in the US recently. And, ta daah!, for potential work reasons, I find out I need to go to conference in the US in a few weeks.

So, I'm making my reservations. We now have credit card accounts in the UK and the US. And, my DH and I had been chatting about how it's probably worth using the US cards in order to pay for some of the US travel items (ie: hotel) so as to not have to encounter some of those exchange fees...

However, we're UK people now, and we have UK travel insurance. If I pay for the hotel with my US credit card, would it still be covered by my UK insurance?

Yes, I have to call my UK travel insurance providers... But, I thought I'd toss this question out to UK-Yankee because, someone might have encountered this one and has some wisdom to share. I'll keep the forum posted after I find out about this... but, it will be tomorrow. I think I've hit my fine-print-reading limit for today...

Many thanks for any wisdom or humor.

If you pay with a credit card you are covered by the credit card company.

Surely it depends on how you get paid, if you are paid in pounds then you'll still get hit with exchange fees when you want to pay off the US credit card.
Also you get a better than the high street rate on the credit card.

But it's down to what you prefer.

I don't think the method of payment has anything to do with being covered by travel insurance.  If you have money in the US, I would definitely use the US cards to purchase things in the US.  I always did when I lived in the UK.
