Just out of curiosity, for the day that I can finally cook for DH and myself, what's the equivalent of a flank steak cut here in the UK? Would it be the same, or is there a different phrase? Would it come pre-packaged like in the States, or would I have to go to the butcher's counter, or a proper butcher? Can't wait until I can make carne asada burritos for us!

Oh man, I thought I could at least find some pinto beans to blend, arghhh  >:(

Canned pinto beans are available in both Asda and Morrison's supermarkets near me.

I think it's stew meat. On NYE we went to a friend's house (she is also American) and her parents were over for the holidays. Her mum was making pulled beef and said she went in the butchers and told him what she called the cut in the States (I think it was flank) and he knew what she wanted, as she wanted it as a joint rather than already cubed which is what you'll find stew meat sold like here.

My goodness...word to the wise do NOT buy the enchilada sauce you can get at Tesco and the like...in the boxes near the taco stuff. It is SO bad...tastes like rancid pasta sauce. I haven't found a good substitute. Though the taco seasoning is not too shabby.

On the other hand, there is great burrito chain in London called Tortilla (tortilla.co.uk). They make huge burritos like Chipotle does in the US...very much a good substitute if you've got the hankering for that type of "mexican" food.

I have been making delicious homemade guacamole as of late...smash up three avocados, the juice of one lime, some corriander, garlic salt, and chopped onion. Very tasty.

Have you seen our Cooking in the UK Just Do It! thread? According to the diagram there, it's flank in the UK as well. I don't eat beef, so I'm definitely not an expert here!

According to recipes4us.co.uk, thin flank is used mostly for mince, and thick flank (also known as top rump) is suitable for slow roasting, slow frying or braising.

I've never even heard of Holland and Barrett. There might be one in the toon somewhere, but it would be a long way to go for frozen food.   :(

There's one in Eldon Square...

Dried pinto beans are available in Waitrose (also Eldon Square), and Old El Paso in supermarkets generally. If you're in Newcastle check the food hall in Fenwick's or the big Asda in Benfield for other American goodies. Some Sainsbury's carry masa harina for tamales and corn tortillas, and if you don't like OEP flour tortillas (I don't... too doughy) there at least is plenty of flour and lard available everywhere to make your own :D

Thanks! I've been to Fenwick's many times for the peanut butter cups, along with sriracha sauce and a few other things. (Though now that I can get peanut butter cups right in my little village at the Tesco Express, I seem to have lost my craving for them.  :P) I live a ways north of Newcastle so I don't make it down there very often, but I will have a look at the Waitrose for some dried pintos next time I get a chance. I've never noticed there was one there at Eldon Square, but I'm sure I can find it.

The Waitrose hasn't been there very long... it's down the escalators from John Lewis. If you go to the Toon for a big shop you might also try Chinatown for sriracha and US peanut butter (usually Skippy) - less expensive than Fenwick's!

Jewlz, can you get Ocado delivered?
They deliver all over the UK even  if there's no Waitrose nearby. There's lots of offers and vouchers online, you can get lots of american stuff on there and some is at much better prices than the import stores.
For instance Grape Nuts are about £2 on Ocado and £5.99 at import stores (although they do charge £6 for Luck charms ??? )
They have, off the top of my head -  Jif Peanut butter, skippy peanut butter,  corn bread mix (I got some for thanksgiving), lots of betty crocker stuff, Hersheys syrups and bars, stove top stuffing, proper maple syrup, Karo Corn syrup, Marshmallow Fluff, tinned or dried pinto beans, black beans and black eyed beans etc

Might be worth putting an order in to stock up on some goodies you can't get normally, not just american stuff but other stuff your little store doesn't stock :)

You had me at Stove Top. :D I've never had a problem getting Grape Nuts here. I thought they were widely available? Maybe that's why they are cheaper than Lucky Charms. I did see a box of Lucky Charm's in Fenwick's once and I think it was about £6 -£7 a box.  :o No surprise, I didn't want them that badly.  :P I will look into the Ocado thing. Or just keep b*tchin' and moanin' about stuff that I can't get at my local shops.  ;D
