UK citizens get their NIN sent to them automatically when they turn 16 or so.  I guess if one was a naturalized citizen without an NIN, they'd still have to answer the questions....

Yep, that is true, but in my case I left the UK before I was 16 and am now returning.  I have rang them to see if I had a NIN in their system, but it seems I don't so I have to go thru the whole process of getting one.

Kizmet, How did you interview go?

Lola, did you get your NIN card yet?

My interview is tomorrow!  I am only worrying about how to get there, in case Richard can't take me.  Today the window guys were to be coming at 8:10, at 8:45 they had not arrived and Richard said he would drive me so he left them a note.  Oh well, I guess I will just get a train to Woking if I need too!  Mindy, is that where you went?  I can't remember?  Do you know the address?  I don't have it here at work.  I can't wait to get this all over with!!!!

I have my NI interview on Sept 8th at 3 pm.

In case anyone is in the Plymouth area you have to call and leave a message on a crackly answer phone and they call you back.  They actually called me back the same day.  You can't just walk into the office as they guards at the front door won't let you in and they basically just point to the number on the wall.

I'll post back about how it goes.

I have the number, but I'm still waiting for the card.  The guy said it'd be 6-7 weeks, so I'm not gonna start worrying until after the 22nd!   :)

He wanted the dates that I'd been in and out of the UK and was extremely impressed that I'd already written them down (Hello!  Thanks to the forum!).

Hey, Lola, I have my interview next Thursday but I wonder if you (or anyone) have any thoughts about this: my old expired passport is in California in a box and my current one I've only had for about 2 or 3 years. Do you think those ins and outs of the UK are adequate or do you think I should call and ask my mum to dig out my old passport and tell me my entry and exit dates from the past 10 years? Granted, the bulk of them are in my current passport, but that's definitely not every single one in my life!!!

If I were in your situation, I'd ask my mom for the dates in the old passport.  The guy who interviewed me said they needed ALL the dates I'd ever entered the UK, but that the visits lasting 30 days or more were the only ones that were written down.

Be prepared for the interviewer to be a stickler and ask that you have the old passport in hand.  I wouldn't be too surprised if they asked you to come back when you had the other passport.  Then again, you may just have a lenient interviewer who doesn't care...it's really the luck of the draw on stuff like this.

The very worst that can happen is that you'll have to reschedule your interview, but really, I think it'll be fine if you just have the dates written down somewhere.

Has anybody encountered this situation before?

It's near the police station.  If Richard can't take you, pm me and I'll give you a lift.

My NIN interview was about 2 years ago and I had traveled to the UK off and on since I was 17 (I was, at the time of the interview, 32). Anyway, I only had my most recent passport which I got in 1997. They never asked me for my old one and never asked for dates prior to 1997. Maybe I was lucky? Maybe 5 years is enough? I don't know.

Regardless, don't you have to specifically ask for your old passport to be returned when you renew one these days? Probably a good thing for expats to do these days whereas regular travelers would only do it as a keepsake.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Yeah, it's at home in a box somewhere, I can't imagine where or how to ask my mother to find it.  I will not worry about it though, if I need to rescheduale oh well.  I've had this new one since 2001.  t also didn't say I needed the old one on what to bring.  OK, I will not worry. (I'm worried, don't be fooled!)

Balmerhon, who is the cutie you have there as your aviater!?  SOOO cute!!!

Isn't she awesome? She's my uncle's granddaughter from his second marriage (his wife's daugher's baby). She is WAY too smart for a kid her age. They are run ragged by her and she's not even 3 yet!  :D
