Weird Symptom. Help!
« on: January 17, 2010, 10:40:32 PM »
So the past month or so I've been having this weird burning sensation on the skin under my left breast.  It doesn't feel like it's in the muscle, it only feels like it's in the skin. I don't get any discoloration or anything, just this sensation.

It started off when I was sleeping on my left side but it's begun to do it when I'm sleeping on my right as well (still same spot under left breast, though) and a few times it'll do it when I get up in the morning and I'm walking around if it was doing it badly at night.

At first I thought it was like a muscle pulling or something but when I rub into it, it doesn't do anything. Now I'm wondering if it's some sort of nerve thing?

Has anyone had something similar? It's doing my head in. It makes sleeping difficult (as if I needed anything else to cut into my ever decreasing sleeping time).

I also forgot to say that the area sometimes goes numb. Which is why I think it could be nerve related.

It might be your skin stretching. Are your boobs getting bigger or have you put on weight around your chest?

No, not at the chest. The girls are definitely moving up and the belly is becoming more rounder towards the top but everything else seems the same so far. I haven't had the sensation anywhere else other than this one place.

I had numbness with Josh right at the top of my bump smack in the middle. Lasted months, went away as soon as he came out.
Talk to your GP or midwife though if you are really concerned.

Cheers guys. I see my midwife on Thursday, so I'll ask him.

It was quite bad last night and I couldn't sleep. Had to prop myself up and slept for a few hours sitting up but it was the worst nights sleep ever.

Sleeping in the later months of pregnancy is not fun (For most!)  I can imagine with twins it's that much worse :(  Just think, it will be over in less then three months and you will have your two gorgeous girls with you soon.  All worth it! :D

If you're lying on your side try putting pillows under your bump and boob areas and see if that helps a bit. I hope you get some good sleep soon!

It friggin better be. ;) I'm just grumpy from lack of sleep so I know what you're saying but it doesn't feel like it at the moment.

I've tried this too, unfortunately it doesn't help. The only thing that stops it is sleeping on my back which is impossible for more than a minute as I have trouble breathing and I feel faint or sitting up. I had to sleep sitting up last night, was the only way to get any sleep but that's the position the girls love and they move around more, so I woke up around 4:30 with both of them squirming around. I must have had about 4 or so hours of sleep.

If it wasn't for tea, I'd be a wreck today.

Ashley, have you tried sleeping on your back with pillow(s) under your back?  I was reading a book that had an illustration of why sleeping flat on your back is uncomfortable...basically it said the uterus (and babies) falls towards your lungs and diaphragm, so it makes it impossible to breathe as these organs are compressed even more.  Supposedly if you put the pillows under your middle back, the uterus then falls towards down in your pelvis which allows the lungs more room and should help you breathe better.

I have no clue if this would work, but I just wanted to throw it out there.  The illustration was very compelling!  :-*

Cheers. From what I've been told the other problem with sleeping on your back is that the uterus is compressing on one of your major arteries. It doesn't hurt the babies but it's decreasing your bloodflow and you can faint.

But your illustration would explain why I can't breath when I'm on my back.

Yes, sleeping on your back is meant to be avoided because it compresses the vena cava, which can also decrease bloodflow to the baby/babies.  But I have also heard women who say their doctors say just do what you can so you can sleep!!

Awwwwe... hunnie! I hope you feel better soon. I have nothing to offer that may be helpful to you but just wanted to say that our bodies definatly do very weird things when pregnant. The top, outter part of my left leg has been doing this weird thing where it falls asleep and goes completely numb if i dont move it for about 5 mins which is particularly annoying because i sleep on my left side and on that leg! Im asking my midwife about this on Wednesday at my appointment but am not expecting to get a logical answer. The joys of pregnancy.  ::)

I saw my midwife yesterday but he didn't know what it was. He thinks it's a muscle pulling but recommended I go see my GP if it's a problem. I'm a little disappointed. I've googled this and loads of women have had the same problem but no one knows what it is!

In any event, the last few days it's faded a bit and I can sleep, hallelujah.

That's funny. I get something similar with my arms. The arm that I'm not sleeping on will go to sleep during the night. It's really annoying to wake up to.
