The nerdiest question in a while...
« on: January 18, 2010, 03:21:21 AM »
But, hey- this is the internet, so it's okay to be a nerd.  ;)  Help a sister out here.

I recently joined a pub quiz team, and I really, really, really want my team to win. Any tips on how to study up for a pub quiz?  I'm in the States currently.  TIA.

Read all the papers and watch a lot of news!
My boyfriend is a quizmaster (seriously, that's what they call themselves!  :-X ) and I went with him to one of his quizzes last week.
There was a LOT of current events stuff.

I think it depends on the quizzes that you're going to be going to. I used to go to two every week in the US (yes, I'm a geek), and they were completely different. One was very much general knowledge; while the other had lots of local current events, word play and esoteric music. The key is to have a well-balanced team. Ours was a team of four with one person really good at pop culture, one who knew history and geography inside and out, one music buff and one with good all-around knowledge.

My advice would be to go the first time without expecting to win - just scope it out and try and work out what sort of questions they ask. Then you'll know what to do the next time.

Exactly what Chary said!

I dont think there is a way to be prepared until you have attended the quiz at least once.  The one we go to is never about current events, and I wish it was because that is the only way I feel I can help.  There is always a lot of history and geography and a few categories that are supposed to be fun, but I never know anything about them like Disney Movies.  Although last time, they had an entire category about the Bible!
We go with my MIL who knows everything about literature, history, art and anything French; my husband knows British pop culture, more history and politics; and our friend who knows all about music.  I know nothing, unless its a random American question :)

(but I do have to mention that we have won the last two times!)  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

This is exactly how I feel watching University Challenge!!! Hahaha, never get the question unless it's a random American one. Lol.

Congrats on winning the last 2 times though!

I'm going to my first pub quiz next Monday.  Going for the experience more than anything....however, a win would be nice too. :)

I'm so bad at university challenge - I have a degree in physics, but somehow all that knowledge just flies out of my head as soon as a physics or maths question comes up on the show... I end up getting the answers wrong to questions I ought to know :P.

No degree here, just good at trivia.  First it took ages for me to even be able to understand the host.  Now that I do, I can't for the life of me answer most of the questions.

However, last night, while the hubby and I were guessing at the answers (even though incorrect) we did guess some of the same incorrect answers as the contestants.  So there was a bit of merit in that too.... if you're going to be wrong, may as well guess the same wrong answer as all of the smarty pants. :)

Don't worry I'm working on figuring out our last losses.  [smiley=smart.gif]  I think we're going to recruit my sports man/attorney friend just so we can kick booty.  I'm always all over current events- but it's on now. I hate to lose. Thanks all- I wish you were a part of the SHM. (Straw Hat Mafia- our team)
