No job. How much should I have in bank? ILR
« on: January 19, 2010, 02:30:47 PM »
If I am applying for ILR through spouse visa, how much money should we have in the bank to show we can support ourselves? My spouse and I do not have a job. Thanks.

How are you supporting yourselves now?

Its not a matter of showing that you have a specific amount in the bank at any one time.  As you said, you need to show you can support yourselves and you are not doing that currently.   Hopefully someone else will come along to advise how the changes to third-party support might help your cause.

Also, remember that ILR application will cost you at least £820.

The Supreme Court has ruled 3rd party support is allowable for entry clearance but I don't think this extends to ILR so if you mean your parents will deposit money into your account for your application, I am not sure this will be acceptable.  What they will want to see is how you've been suppoorting yourself for the past 2 years.

I am planning on borowing a large amount of money a few months before my application, placing it into my bank account, and then showing the bank statements in my application. My only question now is how much is enough. How much is enough? $30 000, $40 000?

As Shahbanou has said,

What they will want to see is how you've been suppoorting yourself for the past 2 years.

They will want to know where that money came from and if it is a loan how you're planning on repaying it if you have no other assest generating income and no jobs.

There is no such thing as 'how much is enough' when it isn't your money to begin with...you would need to show how you've been supporting yourselves during your 2 year residence period as were the conditions of your visa (mine as well) which obviously you haven't been... most likely your application would be refused.

You cannot just borrow money and claim that it is yours to support you and your husband.  Even if you could $30,000 will not get you very far with no work on the horizon...  You need to realize that in your current situation, you do not qualify for ILR.  When was the last time either of you worked?

The OP needs to provide more details before anyone can say s/he doesn't qualify for ILR, although from the few facts we have so far it doesn't look terribly hopeful.  Perhaps this is a temporary period of unemployment? Perhaps s/he has a job lined up?

Perhaps he/she should continue working until after you apply for and receive your ILR.

I'm confused.  You said in your first post that neither you nor your spouse is working, and that you plan to borrow 30,000 pounds to prove maintenance for your ILR.  Now you're saying that your spouse IS working but is considering quitting because you don't need the money?  Obviously you do need the money, or you wouldn't be considering a £30,000 loan.  Why doesn't your spouse just keep the job until the ILR application is finished?

If your spouse has been working for the last 2 years and earning enough to support both of you then you'll be fine.  I'm not sure how you go from relying on your parents to not needing your spouse's income, I'm sure there's some information missing here ...

What I meant was that when I apply for ILR, neither of us will have jobs. We dont need the money to pay rent, eat, travel etc. Our parents provide for us. The loan is just to show the home office that we have money. Another reason my partner wants to stop working is to take an elderly relative on holidays. The relative is getting old in age and may not have many more chances to travel.
