Visiting the IRS at the Embassy for I-864 docs...
« on: August 05, 2004, 08:50:57 PM »
David & I went to the walk-in hours at the embassy this morning to see if they could get me copies of my 2002 & 2003 filings, and tell me what to do since I didn't file in 2003 (in the US). He said "How much moeny did you make in the US? (Answer:none). He said how much did you make here? (Answer: less than £1000). He pulled out a sheet of paper saying that I didn't have to file for 2003. he said to bring it to the interview in Sept along wiht my 2002 & 20001 info (which he got for me very quickly!) - and setn us on our happy way. SO helpful - and we were in and out of there in 20 minutes!

Hi,

I think I have the same letter that they gave to you.

I've been a full time homemaker since 1997 (I prefer to call myself Director of Domestic Affairs).

I called the IRS helpline and double checked, though I'd taken advice previously, about whether I should be filing anything.  I told them that I was repatriating and what was required on the I-864.  She asked if I had any income, job or other, and I said no.  She then said there was a form letter for people like me stating that if you are below the limit for the relevent year, you are not required to file federal taxes.   This woman was very helpful and the letter was posted to me in two days.

I believe the I 864 requires that you write a letter explaining why you were not required to file taxes, if that is the case.  So I've done that and will attach the letter from the IRS.

I'm so glad to hear somebody else has the same circumstances as us.  I know I'm following the rules, but you can't help but worry anyway.  This is reassuring!

Yep! I'm bringing my 2001 & 2002 info, and the printed sheet they gave me that covers me for not filing in 2003. :) That with my filled out I-864 (with a WHOLE lot of zeros!) - and I'm golden. :D They were SO helpful there it was unreal, WAY more helfup than their stupid phone service which basically says "We're really busy, call America. Oh, and we're not going to put you on hold. Goodbye! *click*"
