Anniversary trip suggestions
« on: January 26, 2010, 10:13:47 AM »
Our 25th anniversary is in mid-February.  Suggestions for a long weekend trip would be appreciated.

Go on Friday and come back Monday!

You don't give any clues about the sort of things you both like, budget, where you might already have been, places you'd like to go.

I mean I could suggest anything from a nice hotel in the Lake District to an upscale hotel in Paris!

I was thinking the same thing!  :D  Give us some clues--general area you'd like to visit, your budget, what you like to do (hiking? museums? etc.)  Do you prefer B&Bs, self-catering, hotels? etc, etc.

Do you want to go somewhere in the UK or overseas?

Sorry about the lack of information but I really do have a pretty blank (wide open) slat.

We have been in the UK less than a week after transferring from our last assignment in Qatar.  So places in the UK certainly are of interest.  Probably would perfer a B&B if in the UK.

Normally we travel with an unstructured schedule and try to 'do-it-all' (taking in both museums and outdoor activities and tours) which means we over do it most of the time.

A long weekend, as someone suggested, is what I have in mind.  Paris would be great but we would be just as excited with a ski trip.

Money is always an issue but how many times do you celebrate the 25th anniversary?

Sooo you see I am open for all ideas and will try to chose the best of the suggestions.

My husband and I were going to celebrate our anniversary this February by hiring a cottage in Wales for a few days...but we've had a few car bills come up and my ILR application is due next month so we've had to cancel...

But I will share our idea with you.  ;)

Myself and my husband stayed in a gorgeous little self-catered place in Oakham two years back for our anniversary - I'd highly recommend it:

The place used to be this couples' garage, and they turned it into a tiny one-bedroom house.  It's extremely comfortable with a fairly private garden of its own.  It's right on the edge of Oakham, so very easy to walk into town and wander about, and obviously, is on the edge of the Rutland water if nature and that almost-sunk church and the like are of interest! :D
12th Oct 2009: Applied for SET(M)/ILR
31st Dec 2009: First child born - welcome, Miss Leah Elizabeth!
21 Jan 2010: ILR received, yay!
July 2011: Citizenship!

If you are just coming from Qatar, you have probably had enough sea and beach for a while, so I would suggest a city break in a less crowded city than Paris.... Maybe Bruges?

Since you're just arriving in the UK, how about Edinburgh?

DH and I stayed at a guesthouse in the Lake District a few years ago... It was beautiful and romantic!

I'm also a fan of Scotland... Only went for a couple days and we drove around as much as possible. I loved every minute of it!
Finally living with my Husband in London after 6 1/2 years together but apart... and loving my life!

Mumbles in Wales is a lovely spot. There's a lovely B&B called the Glenview we've stayed at a few times. From there you can tour around the Gower peninsula, lovely scenery, friendly locals.

I also second the Edinbrgh idea, loads to see and do there.

The Cotswolds?  A cozy Inn with a pub and a fireplace?  There's a place called the White Hart Royal Hotel in Moreton-In-Marsh that looks lovely online.  Where are you traveling from, and how?  Car,train?

Some super-cheap fares on Ryan Air for getaways to Ireland . . .  Like   10 or 20 pounds.

I agree with the Cotswolds - we've stayed in a couple of lovely, romantic hotels there over the years. We take long walks during the day and then just chill in front of a fire in a pub in the evening.
