Tesco Online delivery... do you tip the deliveryman?
« on: January 26, 2010, 10:03:55 PM »
Just placed my first online order for Tesco. Do you tip the deliveryman when he shows up with the boxes?

Many thanks,
Rutabega

No, I have never tipped them.

In any case, I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't allowed to accept tips.

Officially they are not allowed to accept tips, however they can usually be persuaded to take one if you try hard enough! (If they are sure you aren't a mystery shopper who will rat them out to their boss). I always give mine a pound, but that's my personal choice.

I tipped 5 GBP at Christmas and might give him another fiver sometime during the summer if I continue to have the same delivery guy.  I do not tip every time.

I wouldn't tip... you're already paying a pretty hefty delivery fee.

Yes, but you can afford it, or you wouldn't be using the service, and they are on £6 per hour. That's why I tip. Just my personal choice.

Rutabega - Some people may choose to tip, but it's certainly not expected. I'd be willing to bet very few people do. I know I never have. So don't feel you need to.

Thank you for the advice! It is much appreciated in anticipation of the first time we're getting a delivery tomorrow!

It's especially appreciated as, after 7 months in the UK, I finally feel like I know enough product names here that I could even attempt to order online!

The fee for delivery here ranges from £3-£5.50. This is less expensive than if we took the bus out there and then the cab upon our return with the bags. The order, however, is not quite as stocked up as I would be if I went out myself. I find myself paying £30 less for the total bill than I would if I went out there... but, it's worth a try. Especially if it saves time here. Also, I think I hurt my back with my last trip last week. So, if the delivery guy brings it right to the door--hurrah!

I will say, that overall, I found the online prices here in the UK to be about the same in the shop. This was different from trying to order online while living in Boston, MA, which had much more significant markup for online orders.

My fingers are crossed for a positive experience! Thanks UK-Yankee compatriots!

Make sure that he brings it in, helps you unpack and takes away the crates.  They are supposed to do this.  I had 1 guy who pretty much just shoved the crates across the door, wouldn't help me unpack, wouldn't wait for me to unpack and so obviously wouldn't take away the crates.

I don't use the service, because I cannot afford it.
In fact, £6 an hour is sounding pretty good to me right now, so I might see if Tesco are looking for drivers in my area.  :)

If I lived in your area and you were my Tesco driver, I'd tip you!  ;D

I think they make  more than £6 an hour and you can double up on the overtime and working after 10pm & Sundays.

I used to rake it in working at Tescos when I Was 16, I paid my own rent and bills (had my own flat) whilst I was at college doing my A levels, on about 22 hours a week.

Ours used to do this, but the last time the guy came he said drivers are no longer allowed to enter private homes?

Anyone else heard of this?

From the Tesco website:

"Delivery
Delivery will be made to the address specified by you on the completed order form.

We will deliver your order to the main entrance of the delivery address. At your request, our driver may carry your order into the delivery address, for example, to a particular floor in an apartment block or into your kitchen but only if: a. the driver has your permission and b. our driver believes that it is safe and practical to do as you request. We always reserve the right to deliver only to the main entrance of the delivery address."

The link where I got it from today:

http://www.tesco.com/termsandconditions/termsconditionsGroc.htm

I had a delivery last week and he brought it into the kitchen, helped me unpack and took the green crates with him.  Just like always.
