My recent experience with the NHS was not good.
Af a routine appointment with a consultant I was told to report to A&E (accident and emergency) and get admitted for some serious treatment.
That kinda grabs your attention.

While I was there for five nights I was moved four times. Medication was screwed up.  And an "ultrasound" turned out to be a much more invasive process.

The silly thing is that I have private medical insurance which I should have used - but when you are told to report immediately for emergency treatment it can affect your judgement.

Cascode, was that for a heart problem? The single biggest mistake my husband and I made when we got married was my not signing on to his private insurance (it just never seemed it would be necessary). Now I have a degenerative bone disease, a railroad track of metalwork in my arm and elbow, and am at the mercy of the NHS (actually, we're saving to blow most of a year's income on a private  hip operation). But I still have to say that it's better to have free healthcare, long wait or not, than to go without unless you have health insurance, as it is in the States.

Cascode,

I gather you're going to stick with your private GP from now on, no? And I take your word on the arm wrestling. I've met my broken-bone quota for the year. But maybe next year.  ;)

Cascode,

We should exchange X-rays one day. The ones of my left arm with the cute plate and the 12 quaint pins look much like a railroad track. Now I'm just waiting for hip surgery. My new lease on/purpose in life is to see JUST how many metal detectors I can set off. Or maybe convince the US or UK intelligence services to just go ahead and make me bionic. (I think the long hair would look cool in slow-motion running.)  :D

Suzanne...

You realise I'll never be able to see your name again without thinking "We can build her stronger...faster"  (or some such...gack to garbled childhood memories...)
