Pet friendly flats?
« on: January 28, 2010, 08:47:29 PM »
My fiancé and I have been scouring the internet looking for possible flats in Leeds. The problem is many of them seem to have a no pets policy.

Does anyone know of any pet, or more specifically cat "friendly" agents in or around Leeds (Roundhay, Chapel Allerton, Headingley, etc)? Our cat is not declawed, but he's fixed, litter trained, and generally well behaved.

Nope, not yet...

We're prepared to haggle though. I've heard that offering to pay pet deposit sometimes will sway a landlord/lease agent.

Are you also looking for something in Leeds? If so, whereabouts?

We're in London, but this is what worked for us in our first apartment.  We offered an extra 2 weeks deposit to ease the landlord's mind about our 2 cats.  Our current place didn't care at all, so we didn't bother to offer.

We also focused on places with hardwood floors throughout, and when we'd go see them, we'd have a pre-planned conversation about how great hardwoods are for cats, even allowing for the occasional hairball incident.   ;D

Ha ha, that's very clever of you 0phinky! I might have to try that.

We were thinking about hardwood too. I've been cursed... it seems the majority of houses I've lived in in the US have had beige carpeting. You can imagine how easily they stain. Of course being a cat owner, I can finally understand the appeal of wood flooring.

I'm in the same situation, in fact I was coming here to post about it as well! I've been in Manchester since Wednesday evening looking for a place, and have had some pretty strong reactions to pets in apartments. One woman said their agency (which, of course, seemed to have most of the available flats in the area I'm searching in) doesn't allow pets for allergy reasons - you might have cat hair on you when walking through the common areas. She didn't quite like me reminding her that guests might just have cat or dog hair on them as they pass through those areas!

I managed to find one agency which is pet-friendly - Jordan's. Not sure if they have anything in Leeds, or outside of Manchester, but a peek at their website and maybe an email might be worth it: http://jordansrentals.sites.letmc.com . The guy I spoke to there today was incredibly helpful, and while I may have to rent something sight-unseen, I've got a good feeling that he'll find me a place.

For a nation of animal lovers, it is really difficult to find an animal-tolerating landlord or agency!

Sorry, I tried to edit my above post, but the editing function doesn't seem to be working...

I wanted to add: If anyone knows of a letting agent or landlord in Manchester that would accept two indoor-only neutered/spayed cats, please let me know!

Hi,
Did you have any luck in those neighbourhoods?
I am looking now, as we are moving (family with cat) to Leeds from NYC. Uncarpetted houses are more acceptable to us.
Any pointers?
Thanks
SC

We did find something, Chakars, in Kirkstall. I do like the flat. It's really close to Headingley and we have the train station nearby.

We made a deal with our landlord: We will have the flat professionally cleaned when we move out. I think the flats are rented out by different letting agents. Some have hard wood floors, others have carpet. Overall, the complex seems to be a pet friendly place as I've seen lots of cats looking out windows and a few residents walking their dogs.

I sent you a PM. Good luck with your search!  :)
