Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by things you didn't do than by things you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Take that question mark off.  Here I am!! (with a slightly different username, though I kept the smurf)

Add Mattj74, Sedders, AnotherYank, Dagobah, Katiekins, Lightbulb, Peedal, Scrappit, Hezza

Granted some of these new about this board and were already posting.  Somehow, I am always the last to know, though.

Has your mom been visiting?  I know that was coming up and I hadn't seen you around recently.

I'm new on both boards but have the same user name. Wasn't chance that I knew of the boards though. Both of them are used as sources of information for American military members and their spouses that receive overseas assignments. I'm an ex-spouse of a military member.

Really?  That's quite interesting!  Are they touted in some "official" capacity, i.e., say in an ACS Welcome Packet?

Where I got my information was from Family Support groups and spouse organizations. I don't know ACS disseminates this information or not but every Unit will have several spouses that are from different countries and all of them are happy to help the rest adjust to the overseas living experience as painlessly as possible. In the spouse groups I was involved in we always did a monthly newletter that provided information for helpful resources, including internet websites.

I'm all too familiar with spousal support groups (btw, ex-spouse of a military man as well - only he's now ex-military as well).  Still, it's cool that the site is being put out there as helpful.  Not know what branch of the military you're referring to (I'm talking about the Army), ACS would always compile welcome packets for families with information about the post they were going to and all sorts of information to help out in finding things including support groups.  Maybe they don't do that anymore.  Pity if they don't.

I was also associated with the Army. Yes, ACS still compiles welcome packets for arriving families but I found during my 16 years of moving hither and yon that the best people to ask for information were the other spouses...plus I'm not a shy person and had no problem with going "out on the economy" as we called it and making a fool of myself with the locals, lol.

Spouses in the military are a "family", as I have noticed a lot of you on these boards are. I can relate to that.

What other forum?

And why are so many people coming here from it?

Hi Jemima,

As one of the migrators, my sense is that we're v. happy to be here. But it not be the most productive thing to hash out here why there's been such a flow. Maybe pm people listed above for more info? Otherwise, just welcome us!

This is probably  a good idea.  Welcome everyone to the site and we're glad to have you here.  This is a very different site with a different vibe.  Each site has something different to offer, and I sure each site has things that you'll like and things that you don't.  Let's just leave old greivances where they belong.  I am no longer a member of American Expats, but welcome peolpe who are.

I should have known from the avatar :)

My mom is visiting in October, she'll be here for 7 or 8 days then we're off to Germany for 5 days or so, to visit friends she hasn't seen in about 15 years. :D

Mindy - I know how forums can be (having run my old company's forum for 3 years or so, 10,000 hits a day, from male teens to thirtysomethings, yech) and still post on expats so I wasn't trying to rile anything, hope you don't mind the thread! :)

Not that it's particularly important, but I only used the other board very minimally and for a VERY short time. I'm much more comfortable here for one reason or another....  :D
