Goya products in the UK?
« on: February 03, 2010, 12:42:57 AM »
Does anyone know if I can find Goya products in the UK? Wales, specifically... I'm Puerto Rican and it's gonna be tough for me living without these (at least until I get used not having them, and until I learn to like other stuff). I'm gonna take a few things from here, since my husband is seriously missing my cooking, but they won't last very long, and I don't have anyone here who can supply me with them.

And if not Goya, maybe another brand of Spanish products...?

Thank you!

I actually don't know the answer to this (I think it might be no, as I have to generally bring Goya stuff over with me for my cousin who lives in Scotland atm when I visit) but I just wanted to share my love for Goya products :-)

I'm Cuban and our cuisine is very similar :-) mmm hispanic food!

I know at least one box of mine coming over this summer is going to contain some Mojo Criollo and Sazon completa!

They have a few things here and there, but if it's Adobo/Sazon etc and the like that you need you won't find it especially in a rural area.

There is a ton of Spanish stuff and if not it's readily available via mail order.

What things are you needing?  If you give me an idea I can give you some subs in the UK. :)

I don't know about finding Goya products in specific (though I love them!), and I'm not sure about shops in Wales, but a good website for that stuff is http://www.lupepintos.com

And if you get up to Edinburgh or Glasgow, they do have storefronts there.

I know! I don't think I could live without it. It was all my husband ate for a whole year and I think one of the reasons he wants me with him so badly is so I can cook it again for him, lol

Thanks for the link :)

It'll be things like the canned pink beans & gandules (pigeon peas), adobo, sazon, cubitos, (ham & chicken bouillon powder). The sofrito won't be a problem since I can make that myself (though I don't think it'll be possible finding culantro or cilantrillo).

Thank you :)

Is that the same as cilantro/coriander? If so, most supermarkets and greengrocers have it fresh. If it's something different, sorry!  :)

ETA: This website tells me that pigeon peas are also known as gungo peas, used in Caribbean cooking. I don't know if that's true or not but, if it is, this online shop sells them.

Yup, that's one of them! There's also another one, cilantrillo, that are small and in a bunch. They kind of resemble clovers. That's good news, thank you :)

The gungo peas I believe are the pigeon peas, but those on that website are dry. I use the green ones.. I guess I'll have to live without those, lol

I've seen tins of gungo peas in Tescos in the Jamaican/World Foods section. You'd have to try for yourself to see if they're the same thing, though.

I'm not lantino at all but we LOVE Adobo seasoning. There's always a few containers of it in every visitor's suitcase. :)

You never know. If what you're looking for is also used in Jamaican or Caribbean cooking, you might be in luck. There are definitely more people of Jamaican and Caribbean heritage than Puerto Rican in the UK! I'm not sure about in Wales, but perhaps online or if you're visiting a bigger city, you'll find some of your missing ingredients. As squirrelypoo says, most supermarkets have a World Foods section, but what's in those sections will vary from region ro region. I'm in Cornwall where there aren't many Caribbean people, so our World Section has more Polish stuff.

Also, you might want to check around and find out if there's any sort of local whole foods co-op where you can order stuff like dry beans and rice by the kilo.  A lot of those groups do monthly mail orders.  I know there's one that covers Uist, and if they've got it there, I can't imagine any other part of Britain would be without one. :)

I really like Goodness Direct for bulk foods and wholefoods stuff (nothing like getting porridge oats and brown lentils in giant 3kg bags!).

I was going to post something just like this after falling in love with Adobo seasoning my last visit back to the US.  My sister uses it in everything.  How I never tried it before I'm not sure.  I brought one back with me, but I can tell it will not last long!!

Now I have the old Goya commercial stuck in my head :D

I know Lupe Pintos has Goya stuff- but its also the most frequent stuff to come back in my suitcase.
I lived in Miami for years and now I really crave Latin American/Caribbean food!
I've never gotten food on my underpants!
