We once moved into a house we rented through an agency that the people had literally moved out the day before we moved in. OMG they left it so filthy!! We took pictures before we did anything and then I scrubbed that place from top to bottom so we could move into it. I e-mailed a copy of the pics to the agency along with the paperwork you sign when you move in detailing all the flaws in carpets, walls etc. When we moved out we sent the first pics  again along with pictures that showed we left it in better shape than we found it. We had no problems getting our deposit back.

to the topic though, I agree with what everyone else has said... they're looking for major damage to the property and likely don't care that your dishes need doing, etc :)

Just to follow up. The inspector came when DH was at home and I was at work. Everything was fine. According to DH, she was mainly looking for mold in the carpet and on the windows.

DH took the opportunity to ask if we could purchase a new washing machine and leave it there when we move out. The one that came with the house is old and tiny - can barely fit more than a few towels - so I'm constantly doing laundry. He also asked for permission to install a TV aerial on the roof.  She said she would ask about both and get back to him.

We will be having these inspections every 6  months.
