How to say a UK phone number properly?
« on: February 10, 2010, 10:44:48 PM »
Kind of a silly question but...

I moved here five months ago, and I still don't know how to say my UK phone number properly - ie., where to pause between numbers.

For example, if I was giving you my US number, I'd say xxx - xxx - xxxx, and pause where the dashes are.

Where does one pause when saying a UK number?

Landline or mobile?

I think it varies slightly, but for a mobile I would say:

07XXX * XXXXXX

Landline in London, I would say:

020 * XXXX * XXXX

Landline in Scotland, I would say:

0141 * XXX * XXXX

I say either
xxxxx-xxx-xxx (numbers with area code thingy)
xxx-xxx (local number)
xxxx-xxxx-xxx (mobile numbers)

Beyond that, I usually just jumble them together awkwardly. Some things, like cab companies or whatever that have patterns, like 40 60 40, I'll say it that way, but for normal numbers I group in 3's for the most part.

xxx-xxx (local number)
xxxx-xxxx-xxx (mobile numbers)

I do the same, except I say 5 numbers first for mobiles rather than 4, as if I was giving a landline area code followed by 6 numbers - e.g. 07xxx-xxx-xxx. In Bristol, most of the numbers start with a 9 in front of the 6-digit local number, so if you were calling locally you would normally say 9xx-xxxx, but if you are calling from outside the local area, then it's 01179-xxx-xxx or 0117-9xx-xxxx  :P!

Same.  Although I was at the vet with my cat yesterday and everyone in the waiting room was talking about this as we were giving contact numbers to the receptionist -- and how it seems like no two people say the number the same way.

I mix up and reverse numbers frequently, and I make fewer mistakes when I keep a consistent pattern.

I group in three for my mobile (can't help it) but for work numbers, it's 4-3-4

I say xxxxx xxx xxx.

Same here.

Or if it's a local number I just use the xxx xxx. Everyone I know does it this way too - the only time I've heard it done in that funny way is by businesses. It was the same in the US. Every now and then I'd run into some corporate asshat who wanted to say it a different way.

Same here.  We'll either say "XXX XXX" or "Town name XXX XXX" .  If its for someone not in the area, its XXXXX XXX XXX.

There is no standard. I once heard a British comedian do a routine about this - about how everyone uses a different system for dividing up a British phone number, so that sometimes he doesn't even recognise his own number.

For example, my mobile number is

12345 567890, and I  say it that way.

Sometimes people will repeat it to me as 1-2-3-4-double 5...

I will hear the "double 5" and at first think its the wrong number.

I found this really confusing when I first moved to England. I found my self writing the word 'double' until I realized they mean 5-5. I hate when I number is given as '1-double 2-double 0-treble 3-4' (or some such). It's so confusing!!!
