Happy Mardi Gras
« on: February 16, 2010, 04:30:48 PM »
I still think of Pancake day here in the UK as Mardi Gras day back in the States. I have been around the tradition of Mardi Gras since i can remember. I am from Mobile, Alabama orginally. YEs, it is the birthplace not New Orleans for Fat Tuesday. I found the website to a news channel back in Mobile to watch the parade today. I just think back to fun times on this day, eating great, people tailgating , and getting drunk. If there is anyone else on here that is from Alabama or has experienced FAt Tuesday, then i say to you, "Let the good times roll."

I think lots of New Orleanians would beg to differ on Mobile being the birthplace of Mardi Gras!  ;)  I am from New Orleans myself and miss Mardi Gras so much...My fifth year away from home and I am seriously considering switching my dates home next year to go back at this time!  Nothing like Rex on a crisp Tuesday morning :)
Even after all this time the sun never says to the Earth "You owe me."
Look what happens with a love like that, it lights the whole sky.

There is nothing to argue about it being the birthplace of Mardi Gras. It is Mobile and that is a fact. New Orleans may be the largest but I would prefer Mobile Mardi Gras anyday.

Having spent almost 75% my years in New Orleans or Mobile, I miss Mardi Gras.  I didn't tell one person about Mardi Gras today because there seemed to be no point.   :-\\\\

They might use a different name for it, but I think the people of Brazil and Venice might have something to say about that!  ;) ;D

It is implied from the OP that we were talking about the US. I am aware it began elsewhere.

One of my lecturers had an International Relations Conference in New Orleans that week of mardi gras. Of course, I had to point out, "hmmm, isn't mardi gras also during that week?" He smiled and said "yes, we're going to the conference on Monday and enjoying mardi gras on Tuesday."

Today I asked him, "so how was your 'conference?'"

"Mardi gras was brilliant," he uttered with a smile.  [smiley=laugh.gif]
