Cost of living outside of London
« on: February 18, 2010, 04:09:05 AM »
Was wondering what the cost of living is like in the northern part of the country.  Looking at taking a position in Cumbria and was trying to get an idea on what would be necessary to make in order for a family of four to live comfortably.  Not rich, not poor, family of four living a typical middle-class lifestyle (cat, minivan, kids in preschool and grade school-you get the idea).  Thanks for any input.

Hi bhofmiami

That's quite a vague and open ended question overall!

top level answer - the cost of living in Cumbria is relatively low compared to perhaps the South East of the UK.

more involved answer looking at some of the criteria you've listed -What kind of salary income can you realistically get for your profession? I'd estimate, if your the single income earner, then you'd be looking at £30K or more to be 'nicely comfortable' - even though quite a few costs of living are lower compared to other areas of the UK, other elements are pretty much the same regardless - Food costs, petrol, fuel/utility bills etc.

If perhaps the jobs in your sector pay lower, I'd suggest your other half could boost income with a job as well, as the less income you get, the 'less' comfortable you'd be in the bigger picture.

What industry are you in?  You must also consider that generally speaking, jobs are more scarce in Cumbria too.

Hope this helps a bit - Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!
