Repat Forum
« on: August 09, 2004, 09:45:10 PM »
Well quite a while ago I had a brief word with Leah re: a sister site for UKY - a Repat Forum. Ive set up the board but Im just tweaking it. I dont really want to steal the thunder of the repat topics here, but I know there's so much more than can be discussed under an actual REPAT forum. Id also like this forum of mine to be a Brits in the USA community. The only forum out there for British Expats is British Expats (how original) and even then - thats for ALL British Expats. Id like to see a place JUST for Brits in the USA and for us American Repats.

Id really like to keep close ties with UKY and Leah seemed very positive about striking up a good relationship between the two forums. So I hope you'll all pop by and sign up and help me work out the bugs and get a community rolling.

The forum has several test names. These are Bye Bye Blighty, High and Blighty, and Beyond Blighty. Id really appreciate more suggestions for a name or a confirmation/vote that these names arent as bad as they sound! You can find the forum here: http://www.factionparadox.com/byebyeblighty/

For now the format is nearly identical to UKY. This is mostly because forums are Organic in may ways and it takes time for them to develop their own shape. Im not trying to rip Leah off at all - I just needed a jumping off point. Im also not trying to steal away members, but I know that sometimes when you move you tend to lose the connection with the place that you WERE in because your interests lie elsewhere. So to transplant members into a more relevant forum when the move to America seems like a great way to maintain a strong connection with UKY.

If you see any mistakes or spelling errors, let me know! If you have any suggestions - I want those too.

Thanks and I hope to have your support.

Your friend,
Sarah

Sarah,

This is wonderful -just signed up and you most definately have all the support you need.

I won't be back in the U.S probably til next year, but I can't tell you how relieved I am that I will have " a place " to hang out that's as friendly and supportive as this one- half of me is terrified of moving back, so this will really help and there is no expat/repat that touches the friendliness of this one :)

Good luck and thank you in advance, for all your hard work (all moderators too)

Just a couple spelling errors I noticed. I'm looking more from curiousity than a need for the site at this point... If we ever do make the move, I'd be thrilled if the DF had a site like this! Hope it works out for you.

Spelling:

Entrepreneurs
Licenses
Grievances
Literature
Leisure
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I just noticed two spelling errors-but this is from a Brit spelling perspective, so could be wrong.

Consular
Inheritance

I really like Beyond Blighty out of the three choices, because it doesnt feel like you're above Blighty, or Blighty wasn't good enough for you or indeed you're just going to b*** about missing Blighty, just gone a bit beyond for whatever reason.......it's a cool name.

This is a great idea Sarah.  I'm very interested in participating.  I'll sign up and have a closer look tomorrow when I'm not so bleary eyed and have better concentration, i.e. with my morning coffee fix!  (repating is currently doing my head in  [smiley=dizzy2.gif] )

I really do want to maintain contact once we're back and, knowing how much I enjoy this site, Tony was wondering if there was a similar forum for Brits in the US....

I'll touch base tomorrow!

Well, we've got the UK Yankies....
How about the USA Lymies...?  Hee hee

No, I just think that the name should relect the UK as a whole, rather than just England or just London...there are a lot of us that have been in Scotland, Wales or N Ireland as well, and it would be nice if the title at least would not be England-centric... in my opinion.

That said, I've no clue what to use...unless you wanted something basic like "Homeward Bound" or "Homecoming--UK to USA"...something along those lines...?

Brits Abroad?

You need something with alliteration. That's why UK Yankee and BritNet sound good.
