Registering to vote = increase in credit score?
« on: February 24, 2010, 10:50:50 AM »
I read the following on MoneySavingExpert.com..

Warning! Not registered to vote? It kills credit scores
An election's on its way, so it's important you're registered to vote. Yet this also massively boosts your credit rating, as not being on the electoral roll stymies your ability to get new credit. Here's some quick credit boosts...
•Register to vote for free online. Go to RollingRegistration to register for the electoral roll. It also shows how to check whether you're already registered.
•Not eligible to vote? For anyone ineligible (mainly foreign nationals), send all credit reference agencies proof of residency & ask them to add a note to verify this.

Does anyone know if this is true?  Should we be telling credit agencies that we are not eligble to vote?

If I recall correctly, there was another thread related to this.  The poster was having a lot of trouble getting any credit established, and was told it was because she wasn't on the electoral roll, even though she wasn't eligible to vote.  As it turned out, the problem was that her address wasn't on the roll; it was a new building, and no one had registered from that address previously.  The reason it mattered was that companies used the electoral roll as a way to verify that an address was a valid residence.

So, if all that is correct, then it would seem that, as long as someone has registered from your address (which seems pretty likely, if you're living with a UKC partner/family member/flatmate, or if it's an old enough building), you're probably ok.

Of course, there may be more to it.

I'm trying to remember from when I put myself on the electoral roll when I naturalised.  I don't think it did anything to my credit, but I haven't applied for any credit cards since naturalising.  It may have made it easier to get a credit card but I didn't get like a bump in the amount I could spend on my credit card just from going on the electoral role.  For bigger credit stuff though, we are looking to buy a house at the end of the year so, and I'll ask when we go shopping for a mortgage if that will affect what we can borrow.  You've got me interested now.

I added a note to my Experian credit report (since this is the most commonly pulled) about why I wasn't on the electoral roll. It was simple enough to do, my score is good and it's never caused me a problem in getting credit.
