Brixton has lots of cool, funky places, yes  the Roxy cinema is excellent. There used to be a fab gourmet vegetarian restaurant there (Bug Bar I think...). Unfortunately every time I've gone there, I've been offered drugs or asked if I had any to sell and once I was approached by police investigating a murder. All within 5 mins of stepping out of the tube. I'm sure other people have had similar experiences in other parts of London or other cities but for me it's Brixton, the place just scares me. Being old enough to remember the '80s race riots doesn't help either.

Oh that's a shame. When was the last time you were here? It's really cleaned up in recent years, you might feel differently now. Come down to the Ritzy some time!  :)

I'm surprised Bradford is not on this list yet  ;D

I was going to mention Bradford. You also wouldn't want to live near Wakefield city centre.

Why not near wakefield town centre?

OMG Bradford just sickens me. I live literally near a whore house (neighbors!) and the police won't do anything about it. I've been offered drugs nearly everyday for the past year. The town centre is constantly under construction but nothing ever changes. People seem so segregated and it's hard to make friends. My depression has sky rocketed since I've been living in this god forsaken hell hole!! I can't wait until my DH finishes his degree so we can get the hell on out of here.

Because there is a big pub/club scene at night and it gets a bit rough sometimes. It's the kind of place you go for a 'dirty' night out.

Why don't you move to Leeds? The commute isn't bad and at least you're not living near a whorehouse (well, depending on what area you move to... I'd not advise moving to Chapeltown)

Pudsey isn't bad compared to Bradford and that's right in the middle of Leeds and Bradford.

Oh how I'd love to Ashley!! Leeds is great, I've 50% convinced DH that it would be best if we moved there. And yes I've heard chapeltown is hellish too.

Ouch, and just noticed thats where you call home.. have you lived in any other part of the country. I lucked out being a student because I lived all over London and got to know the less than desirable suburbs (mainly Essex) but there are some gems. Outside the city I like Brighton but as mentioned if you take a hop your in Hastings and well... the towncentre on a saturday is a bit undesirable.

I'm sure Pudsey is a step up from Bradford, but I wouldn't particularly recommend it.  It has a reputation for being...I don't know...a bit too insular?  Several locals I know here in greater Leeds say that, and I know Andee really didn't enjoy working over there either.

Move to Horsforth or a bit nearer Leeds.  :)

In any case, GibbyGab, you need to get yourself into Leeds & meet some of us sometime.  :)
