A podcast round up!
« on: March 02, 2010, 08:03:05 PM »
I got my new iPod today so am very excited about downloading podcasts again. I know we've had threads before, but thought it would be nice to do a new one talking about our favorites. I'm primarily looking for free ones, but any suggestions (US and UK) would be great!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Looooove podcasts!  My old favorite is This American Life.  I've also just started getting into BBC's A History of the World in 100 Objects.

The only one I download is Mark Kermode's Film Reviews from 5Live

I keep meaning to check out more

Pretty much all my podcasts are from NPR - Daily News, Story of the Day, World Story of the Day, This I Believe, StoryCorps, NPR Environment, Driveway Moments, Radio Diaries, This American Life (my fav!). Can you tell I miss NPR?  :(

I walk to and from work, so I listen to a LOT of podcasts.  Some of my favourites:

Anything BBC (Friday night comedy, History Magazine, Adam and Joe, anything I can find on history or art...)
Anything NPR (Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, Car Talk, This American Life, Driveway Moments for sure)
I also have a bunch of random ones from "Itunes U" which are lectures on tons of different subjects (so I have some on ancient history and some on physics).

I LOVE podcasts!

I enjoy stand up comedy, I get ROFL they are videos and they are about 10 minutes long each.
Haikus are easy.
But sometimes they don't make sense.

I second NPR's Wait, wait...Don't tell me! I LOVE IT!!!!!

I look forward to long drives because I don't have time to listen to it guilt free unless I am on one!

I second (or fifth?) all of the NPR ones, especially Wait, Wait.... I also really like Radio Lab (sort of like a science version of This American Life http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/), A Way With Words (discussion of language, etymology, etc....more fun than I'm making it sound! http://www.waywordradio.org/), and The Memory Palace (very brief [under ten minutes] bizarre true stories http://thememorypalace.us/).  BBC History Magazine also has some good ones: http://www.bbchistorymagazine.com/podcast-page .

I am a podcast addict! I walk to work every day so they're my commute.

The best:

From Our Own Correspondent - interesting 5min slice-of-life stories from BBC reporters stationed all over the globe. Fantastic for getting a picture of what life is really like around the world rather than just what's "newsworthy".

Answer Me This - Helen & Olly answer all sorts of stupid questions sent into them (I was so pissed off to see BBC2 have started a really crappy tv show based on this same premise. These guys do it WAY better!)

The Bugle - John Oliver (the English guy from The Daily Show) and Andy Zaltzman doing a very funny analysis of the week's news. Think of it like a UK Daily Show, but on the radio (and coincidentally, Andy is Helen from Answer Me This's brother!)
Summer 97 - first visited friends in London
99-00 - studied at Uni of Sussex on exchange
Feb 02 - moved to London on BUNAC
Sep 02 - WP granted (IT skills shortage list)
Sep 04 - WP renewed
Sep 06 - WP renewed again (screwed by 4-5 year ILR change)
Sep 07 - ILR!
March 09 - Citizenship!
July 09 - bone marrow transplant :(
18 Sep 10 - wedding!
Mar 12 - half marathon in Paris! 1:47:12!
Oct 12 - Amsterdam FULL marathon! 3:48:23!

I third (fourth? fifth?) all the NPR podcasts.  This American Life is my absolute favorite, and I'm a big Wait Wait DTM, and Fresh Air fan.  I also really like the Savage Love Cast which is a podcast about love, relationships and sex.  I find Dan Savage really humorous.  A good one that you can listen to with your boys is Stuff You Should Know.  They have some really cool podcasts on there, and all that I've mentioned are free.

Oh yeah! I get the Savage Love Cast too. Dan Savage is great! Another one I really like is the Slate Daily Podcast, specifically the Slate Political Gabfest.
