Chip butties are awesome, but I grew up in a family who used butter/marg as a condiment on sandwiches (two generations off the boat from GB and Ireland, and old food preferences die hard I guess).  You need tomato sauce on them.

Pret is a good place to get lunch if there's one near your work.  Lots of salads and stuff.  Boots and some other chains sell "healthy" lunches which might be more similar to NA lunches.  There's generally a Starbucks every few feet.

I get amazed sometimes at how much my tastes have changed.  Although I rarely eat chips, I love chippie chips.  I used to hate thick chips, and honestly, wasn't big on shoestring fries either.  I eat a lot of the few veg I didn't like before moving here such as parsnips and Brussels sprouts.

One thing I can't get into is a lunch food.  Coronation chicken.  Bleh.  I've tried Coronation tuna as well and double bleh.

What exactly is coronation chicken?  I'm a bit scared of it.  I completely agree with you about chippie chips though.  I also never liked thick fries, but chips from the chip shop, with plenty of salt and vinegar are things of perfect gastronomic beauty.

A mild curried chicken salad (chicken mayo), pretty much.  Sometimes with grapes or raisins and almonds.  Not terribly scary.  I have had some really suck versions, though, but when it's good it's goooooooooood.

ETA:  well, it's good if you like that kind of thing.  someone who is anti mayo or curry isn't going to like it!

Really?  That's not scary at all.  I've had that in California.  I've made it myself, in fact.  From the way people talk about it, I thought it was something a lot nastier.

I've never seen or tasted it without the raisins in it.  I am not one who is afraid of sweet and savoury together, but for some reason I've never tasted good coronation anything.

I think the potential for awfulness is high -- crap ingredients, bad mix, too much extra stuff (I've seen it with celery and shredded carrots and a bunch of stuff -- filler).  But it doesn't have to be awful if made nicely.  I don't order it with any frequency for that reason, though.   ;)

Why?

In my head, those two things just don't go together. I have tried it, and I really dislike it. It's just a weird combo that doesn't work to me. But I think it's really about what you're used to and what you've eaten during your lifetime. I never even came across peanut butter for the first time until I was about 8. It seemed like a very peculiar novelty item to me then! But I'd always like peanuts, so I gave it a go. I do like it, but I wouldn't say I love it. On occasion, I'll have a peanut butter sandwich but NEVER with jelly or jam or anything like that.

I definitely think PBJ is so popular among Americans because that's what most of us grew up on! As you can see from my sig, it's pretty much my favorite thing. :P My hubby thinks it's *okay* but isn't as thrilled with it as I am. I get awful cravings for it! Lucky I have Jif and Grape jam in my house now at all times. ;)

Oh, and I <3 Coronation Chicken! Yum. I would prefer it with less raisins/sultanas though. It's always best when I make it myself. :)

Here's something to gross the pb&j haters out:  does anybody remember that awful stuff that was peanut butter and jelly in the same jar, sort of swirled around?  The gross part of it was that it was cheap nasty artificial tasting--both the pb and the jelly.

I never thought it was a gross combo though, but of course I grew up with it.  Curry sauce on chips doesn't sound gross either.  I mean it's just like another condiment--like ketchup, but spicier and Indian.  Anyway, I'm happy to munch on apples, a granola bar, or some oatcakes for lunch--I stick to what I know and what is healthy (boring, I know).

I gross people out because I love my chips drowned in malt vinegar and then dipped in mayo. :P Even if I don't have the vinegar, I like them with mayo.

I have tried the tuna & sweetcorn mix and didn't care for it. Then again, I'm not a big fan of tuna to begin with so it could just be that.

Is this what you're talking about?

YES!!! Wow, the first time we saw that we actually took a photo of it because our family back in the UK would never have believe it! It became sort of a family joke!

Yeah, you're weird.  :P ;D

My old manager (the one who was so horrible to me) used to give me weird looks and comments for eating apples and hummus and crackers (not all together).  She was a real biatch though and hated everything about me.

Ha ha!  Yes!  There was also a cheaper and nastier brand of it (the Smuckers one is probably not too terrible) which had *orange* jelly in it.  :P
