It's true the house spiders in England can be huge but they are completely benign.  They are our friends.  If you treat them well, they will be good housemates to you.  It is true that they like to live in the bathroom.

Nope, sorry, doesn't matter how many times I hear it, they still freak me out. I'll still go running from the room squealing when I see one.

The worst part is when they're in the bathroom and I have to go urgently. If Jon isn't around to take care of the spider then I really suffer.

I have yet to see a spider here, though I suspect in a day or two one will pop up just because I wrote this.

yep saw one today but it was super tiny.

I have to say that the spiders I have seen in our house are bigger here than most I ever saw in the US.

That said, we haven't seen a spider (alive) in the house in about 2.5 years.....I love my kitties  ;D

Unless they're the ones bringing you the spiders, like mine do.

Heh. We had a big one CHASE our cat!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I had one on the edge of the toliet seat the other day!  Good thing I was looking before I sat down.  I'm not bothered by them, but I don't want them biting my bum, so I put it in a glass and put it outside where it will probably find its way back into my house.

Nope, they're full-time indoor kitties.

I'm not normally scared of spiders, but a while back I had one in my bedroom that made an audible thud when it hit the floor (after I had freaked out and swatted it off my arm, where it had unexpectedly landed).  As others have said they are huge and heavy and I don't want them near me regardless of how harmless they are!

eeeek this thread gave me the heebee jeebees just reading it. I hate spiders.

ya the spiders kinda remind me of daddy long legs, which I kinda perfer to those small sneaky bitey ones back in N.E. that run really fast.

They do tend to love the bathroom. I am in the country.

And no unless they start paying rent they are not my housemates and our instantly evicted as soon as they are found. :p

And to further confuse things, over here, a daddy long legs is another kind of bug entirely!  Bizarre, annoying, but harmless, big winged insects.

I think if I saw THAT in my bathroom I may be on the next plane back to America! :o  I have yet to see any big or scary looking spiders here.  Just some very small ones.  We need to get a cat, like yesterday!
Met and fell in love with a Scotsman in early 2007.  Moved to Scotland early 2009.  Had to come back to the US in June 2009 to deal with idiot government employees who screwed up my daughter's passport.  Finally back in Scotland, March 9 2010.  Yes I did fly a 16 hour flight with 3 children and 2 plane changes!

haha the other night we were watching tv, when my partner jumped up and turned on the light. He seen a spider run across the room. We didnt find it in the end. Fast forward to the next night, I was about to jump in the shower, I picked up a towel that was hanging on the side and there was the spider! It was HUGE. I let out a big squeal and didnt go back in there until he came home.

Ack! I'm not even scared of American spiders- not even daddy long legs. I've held a tarantula (as a kid- at a spider talk thingy for kids) but I would NOT want any kind of bug that makes a thud as it hits the ground.

Cheesebiscuit- your bb gun spider story made me cringe! Icccccccckkkkkk! Not sure I'd ever be able to take a shower again in that shower if it'd been me!!!
