Recommend a pub
« on: March 21, 2010, 07:51:25 PM »
Mixing together the pub discussion on the North Yorkshire thread and the great meals out thread, I thought it would be fun for people to recommend their favourite pubs.  When we travel through out the UK, I prefer to eat at pubs, partly because they are often a cheaper meal, but also because you can sometimes get more local colour by visiting pubs.  I'd love to hear about pubs other places that people would recommend visiting.

For me here in York, I have quite a few favourites depending on my mood.

My favourites for food the Mason's Arms, the Deramore (our local and outside York city centre) and The Hole in the Wall has good food.  The Old White Swan has yummy cake.

For atmosphere I love the Old Black Swan.

For catching up with friends for a drink, I have a million others, but since this is food talk, I'll restrict myself to food.  ;)

What are good pubs near anyone else?  Recommend your pubs of choice!  ;D

The Hop Pole in Bath (across from Victoria Park) does a lovely Sunday roast.

When we were in Bath last weekend we met up with some friends at The Westgate. It's just off Milsom Street (city centre), across from Costa Coffee. When I lived in Bath this was actually a different pub and wasn't very nice. But, they have new management now, so they've done a refurb and the food was delicious! DH said it was the best burger he's had in a long time.

Also, the Raven in Bath serves pies made locally in Bristol by Pie Minister and they're delicious! The bad thing about the Raven is it's not kid-friendly, which is a real shame.

Loved the Raven!  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

My picks are based on drink, ambience, and/or food - in no particular order.  My fave Leeds city centre pubs (and two of the oldest):

The Victoria

Whitelocks

Hubby likes these:

The Midnight Bell

Grove Inn

The Adelphi

And then there's our local.

The First and Last Pub in Scotland served up one of the best meals I have had since living here. It's on the northeastern border, just on the other side of Berwick right off the A-1.

I love The Pride of Paddington pub near Paddington Station. I've been there numerous times. I didn't eat much food there, but they pour the best pint of Guinness ever. Even hubs agreed! Plus the staff (when I was there) was very friendly.

For excellent ales, Arcadia in Headingley: http://www.markettowntaverns.co.uk/arcadia.asp?Tavern=Arcadia&Section=Main

Oh yes - that is a good one!  Part of the same pub management group as our local:  http://www.markettowntaverns.co.uk/town-street-tavern.asp?Tavern=Town-Street-Tavern&Section=Main

Which also has several other good pubs here in Yorkshire, including one we've been meaning to try for awhile but haven't got over there yet - to Skipton for it, which I thought was on a canalboat but rather it's just right beside the canal there:

I've been to their pub in Ilkley - Bat T'at, and also to one of the Harrogate pubs - Old Bell Tavern...both of those are good too!

internet addict, I think you should organise a UK Yankee-in-York pub crawl-event for this spring or summer at some point!

I would, but there are so many great places in York we'd only be able to have a half at each stop.  ;D

For real ale and good food:
Castle Tavern - my personal favourite

For real ale: The Clachnaharry Inn

For good music:

For the best view

Oh, what a great idea.  DH and I have a weekly pub night.  Our goal is to try a new pub each week.  So far we have two fave's.

One is called The Avon in Avon Dassett, Warks.  We love the pies and Landlord Timothy Taylor ale.  Maybe it's Timothy Taylor Landlord.  Whatever!

I'll have to ask DH where our other favorite is. It was established in 1098--that's hard to beat!  Will keep you posted.

Oh wow, I have so much to say about this topic.  But today with all this rain (stateside, even!) I'm really missing the Lock Tavern in Camden, north London.  In the summer, during the day, go for a pint of Fruli (Belgian strawberry beer that tastes more like a smoothie to me) and sit outside in the lovely beer garden.  Heaven.

(It can get a bit scenester-y on weekend nights, though, which I tend to avoid.)

Just spoke with DH on Skype.  Our other favorite pub is the Rose and Crown in the village of Ratley, Warks.  We had one of the evening specials - lamb shanks and enough vegetables to sink a battleship.  The pub has guest ales--sorry, but I can't remember what we had, but it was stunning.  Village locals patronize this ancient pub along with their dogs.  Thursday night is cribbage night.  Just lovely--woodburning fireplace and all.
(I would have removed the feather duster from the fireplace, tho!)
