Relocating to Hertfordshire or Bedfordshire
« on: March 22, 2010, 07:52:23 PM »
Hi all,

I haven't been on here for a long time.  Thought I'd pop back on to see if there is anyone living in either Hertfordshire or south Bedfordshire?  My husband is taking a new job, and we'll be relocating by this summer.

We're trying to find an area near a decent school that isn't already oversubscribed!  We have two boys who will both be in primary school in September.

thanks for any help,
Theresa

Hello Theresa-
I live in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. I absolutely love it. Really close to London, but very suburban. I have also lived in NYC, so it may seem busy to most but it is the best of both worlds for me. Unfortunately I know it is pretty expensive, but we don't have kids, and my husband was here long before we ever met.
Let us know when you figure out where to live. There are a few of us planning a get together soon.

Hi,

I'm relatively new here but I'm going to be moving to the UK as soon as (if) the visa is accepted, we'll be living in Bedfordshire. The only thing I've learned about the area so far is to stay away from Luton.  ;) And that Herts is more expensive? I could be wrong. But more expensive probably means it's a nicer place to live.

I will be thrilled if there are other North Americans around!

Maybe if you post in the housing section and say what your parametres are for Herts / Beds, people who live there can advise.

I have a friend in Hitchin and it's a lovely market town, but I generally find the south too expensive for me, I'm afraid!  :)

Welcome back and good luck!  :)

stevenage i guarantee, hitchin is nice if you dont mind the rude lil kids and the real small town and the tight roads and houses, stevenage is not that expensive, you can ge a 2 bedroom house for 600,with garden, the gardens are huge and the house are modern, council tax is 100 per month! and for an apartment your looking at 500 for 2 bedrooms,3 bedrooms stil 700 or less,4 bedrooms 6-800.you got to know where to search, any quetions let me know, but i say best thing is to get a train to stevenage and then catch a bug or train to hitch letchworth baldock and i bet youl choose stevenage.not only for kids its good for adults who want a good night out in a mature environment, cafe bars, chicago, aroma, nando, pizza hut,you have got to see the leisure centres, yes leisure centres and people drive from everywhere to shop there

We lived in Great Wymondley, which is between Hitchin and Stevenage, and we really liked the area.  Some of Stevenage looks like it was built by the Royal Bureau of Concrete in 1973, but the old town part is nicer, and Stevenage has all the major stores you might want for electronics, groceries, home stuff or home improvements.  Hitchin is much nicer, with a nice main square with shops all around it.

yeah hitchin is a small town with such limited shops,i dont know why,but it soes have the nice swimming pool, hitchin is a main square and you get bored of it soooo quickly, but hitchin and stevenage are close to eachother may 5mins to 10 mins drive. The villages are nice around hitchin but job wise and convienence no,I think it depends on the person, its good to go see both parts, and have a look in the comet local newspaper. Stevenage has like 100s more places to go and things to do and shop.Cinema, more gyms, more schools, good schools,i went john henry newman,Where abouts you live now? xx

Hitchin & Stevenage are so close to each other that I think you could live anywhere within 10 or 15 minutes and have everything you'd ever need.  Even in our little village we were only a mile from the Hitchin station with the fast train into London every 30 minutes or so.  If you didn't have a car and were relying on the bus it wouldn't be convenient, but otherwise it was fine.

These days we're out west in Stroud house-sitting for the summer.  Different kind of countryside here.  :)
