Will this be okay while I hold a student visa?
« on: March 28, 2010, 12:16:08 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm on a student visa right now and I'm aware that I'm not allowed to be self-employed. My husband wanted to start an ebay business in a few months time where it would be him doing all the selling, buying shipping, etc. I would not be involved in it. But our account is a joint checkings account. So should I just tell him to forget it or will this not cause any trouble for me when I try to change to a spousal?

Thanks for reading :)

I don't see why it would cause a problem, since he is allowed to be self-employed. Just make sure the business is just in his name.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012
FINALLY A CITIZEN! 29/2/2012

I agree, I don't see any problem with it....but if you are concerned he could open another account with just his name. To be honest if he is really thinking of making a go of the business there are a lot of benefits of having a seperate account when it comes to doing taxes.

Thanks DrSuper and HG. I think the separate bank account is probably a good idea. HG thanks for the taxes tip!

If he wants to do it as a limited company or find out more information about company start up, Businesslink is very good. http://www.businesslink.gov.uk
