English weather in April???
« on: April 05, 2010, 12:14:01 PM »
 ???

I am traveling to Manchester in 2 weeks, and me being the over prepared traveler I am starting to think of what I am packing.   Ive asked my fiance (Manchester where I am traveling) what the weather will be like April 21-27, and he replies "you never know what English weather will be like."  Good Grief.

I have looked on weather sites and it says the average is around 40- high 50 (F).  Which is what I would wear long sleeves for, but whats the weather been like now?  My fiance says its hot?  Its been 75F here, and thats hot...or warm...

I am so confused!!!
Its a packing nightmare! :o

I'm not sure I'd call it hot in the UK right now  :-\\\\... Scotland just had snow blizzards last week and we've had sleet and hail in Bristol!!

Right now, Manchester is 50F and cloudy with a good chance of rain  (according to the online weather report). I'm in Bristol and it's 48F and cloudy (dark, grey clouds), with a chilly breeze!

I've been South America for the last 2 months, so I'm freezing here - I went from wearing shorts and T-shirts in 90-degree, sunny weather in Chile last weekend, to jeans and a winter coat, scarf and gloves in the UK this weekend :P.

Layer layer layer....

I prefer jeans with a long sleeve shirt with a sweater over it...
I hate carrying a jacket but of you can layer you will be set. I don't see shorts in my near future as it is NOT hot to me.

Don't sweat it to much as long as you have good walking shoes forget the cute boots and heels for daily wear but go for a light jacket, jeans or trousers and light sweaters and I think you will be good. Oh and an umbrella

Personally, I'd bring clothes for early Spring.  Maybe a couple of short sleeves or thinner shirts that can be worn under a cardigan or jumper in case the day heats up, but don't bother with shorts or strappy shirts.  If you wear stockings, I'd bring a thin pair and a thick pair.

I live not far from Manchester- we have only had one day that I didn't think I needed a jacket so far. I have not had short sleeves on at all yet. We do often get a couple of warm days in april though. I think everyone's suggestions of layers is spot on-- make sure you bring a waterproof jacket :)

So checklist:

1.  waterproof/rain jacket
2. trainers (no cute heeled boots etc)
2. longsleeves that arent heavy.

Gulp.  I hope i have these particular clothing items LOL. :P

You can bring cute boots!  They're worn here all year round.  If you have short sleeved shirts, bring them along with cardigans or lighter sweaters.  And you don't necessarily need a rain jacket as long as you have a few good umbrellas.

Hi katrinacov -

I've travelled to Manchester at about every time of year and the weather is NOT predictable, your fiance is correct. Oh before I start let me preface this with I am a chronic over packer and am “starting” to learn over the course of many transatlantic flights what I need and don’t need. Plus Virgin has now started charging for bags  :-[ so this has encouraged me to slim down a little on the packing.

Shoes:
1.   1 pair of UGG type boots (not the slipper kind but ones with a sole) – I wore these most everyday over Christmas and was always warm and comfortable as we walked all over the city.
2.   1 pair of nice boots with a heel, you want to look nice for dinner!  - You can’t be going around in trainers for a nice meal ;-)

Clothes:
1.   Two pairs of jeans – one darker and dresser, one more casual and day time.
2.   Various different tops to layer just like people have suggested. Short and long sleeves will do you just fine.
It has been quite a cold April still and you will want a light jacket. I also carry various scarves that help add a little something to your outfit and also keep you warm if you don’t want to wear a jacket all day.
Have you flown into Manchester before?

If not, let me give you a little play by play once you get off the plane until you meet your DF. I wish someone would have explained to me the first time.

1.   Once you land in Manchester, make sure the immigration form they give you on the plane is filled out, ask for a blue form if you haven’t gotten one before you land. This basically asks your personal data and where you will be staying during your journey (know the address if you don’t already).

2.   Go through immigration, the Immigration Officer will ask you why you are there, who you are there to see, how long have you known each other, and more very personal – invasive questions until he is satisfied you aren’t going to try and stay in the UK without permission.

a.   Have your return itinerary printed out and ready to show -they WILL ask for it.
b.   I bring pay check stubs from work to show I have a job and ties back to the US
c.   Whatever you do – do not lie even if you think it will make the process easier, they are trained to trip you up and even when you are telling the truth they make you feel like a criminal!

3.   After immigration you will walk down the stairs to Baggage claim – you won’t see your DF until after you leave baggage claim (this is what tripped me up because in the US, you get your bags after you leave arrivals!)
a.   Have a one pound coin ready to get a luggage cart (if you need one, I always need one as I have 3 bags + a purse)
b.   Everyone is SO friendly there, I always have so random kind gentleman help me pull my bags off the carousel.

Hope this helps! Have a great time  ;D

OMG thank you so much!  That is extremely helpful!  I was curious as to what will happen when I get to Manchester airport as I have never flown into Manchester, and not to mention the last time I flew internationally was 9 years ago! :o

So I get to see my guy AFTER baggage.  Alright.

I will make sure to do what you say.  As far as why im visiting, I SHOULD say Im coming to visit my fiance?  I am staying in an aprtment hotel under his name, so I guess thats ok.

Its going to be different, as I am hoping to get my British Passport before I fly...test it out.  But if it doesnt then immigration it is!

Yes, you should state who you are there to see. Just tell the truth and show that you are aware of immigration law and understand you have to have the proper Visa to stay in the country full time. :)

You will LOVE Manchester :)

Hi!
I'm in Manchester right now :) The weather has been totally batty lately.  Sometimes I feel fine outside in a sweatshirt, and sometimes I'm layering a lightish jacket on top of the sweatshirt. Right now, it's not that cold, but there is a chilly wind about that can sneak up on you.
Definitely bring the cute shoes! And the layers. You can always pop into Marks and Spencer's or something if you need to pick up a scarf or a different shirt. Have fun while you're here!

Jennie couldn't have said it better, the weather is batty.  A week ago I dared to wear a skirt because it wasn't too bad outside, a few days later I was in my winter coat (grew up in Minnesota and Michigan so when I say I had my winter coat on, it as cold) and now it is mild (feels like mid-west autumn weather) but when the wind picks up, it can be chilly.  BTW, I am just north of Manchester.  I currently am doing layers because when I am walking during the day I am hot but when the evening comes I find myself cold.  Think of it like fall into winter transition in Ohio (since I see that is where you are from).  It is bouncing back and forth but nothing like the warm front that just came through the midwest (80 degrees in Minnesota is insane).  Have a wonderful time in Manchester, it is a great city!

cheers!
