Hi Steffuny!

I am at the same stage as you are! :) Waiting for time to pass. Our dog's 6 months will be over in September. He is a yellow lab, 2 years old, 80 lbs! What dog do you have? Which airlines are you planning to fly?

Hi Steff

I am not sure how to ship my dog. I am still trying to figure out which is the best and the cheapest way. I got some quotes from a few airlines but haven't looked into shipping him via the sea. So have you done all your research with QM2? Whats the process in that case? How much does it cost? Whats the best thing to do - to call them or just visit the website (considering i have a 80 lb lab that i want to move). Will you be traveling with them? How much is your ticket?

Any insight into this would be great help! :)

Thanks so much!

AA, when I checked into the QM2 it was crazy cheap to ship the pets ($300 each), but they quoted me $2,700 for a room for myself. That put it well over the cost to just fly both my pets (about $2,200, DC->London, 60lb dog + 10lb cat).

Hope that helps.

i am paying 300 for each dog and my ticket for two ppl is 2190.......of course the tickets vary with what time of year you go............the last one for this year is nov 1st........no one has had anything negative to say to me about this trip over for their dogs......they have a kennel master and treated like little kings and queens......they have been very helpful to me............plus i get to visit them as much as i want.......cunard.com......that should be a bit helpful to you......Coco and other dogs aboard Queen Mary 2 i paid my deposit they sent me a packet with all the information regarding the dogs.........i love that they treat my dogs seperately....asking about each ones needs etc.........my dogs get to arrive on board in their favorite stroller........the idea of being on the water for 7days doesnt exactly appeal to me but for the sake of my dogs health and safety i will do this........my lil boy is really old and would never survive the plane trip....so far im impressed........hope this info has helped you

For future reference, for cruises, you should always call a discount travel agent, who will take some off the cost of the room and probably give you extra amenities as well.  They also might have access to special fares that you wouldn't get directly with the cruise line because the agency does a lot of business with a specific line.

Yeah, I didn't bother looking for deals because I don't really like cruises and I didn't want my boys to be traveling for a week rather than a day. :) I think it would've had to be about $1,000 total (meaning my ticket cost only $400) for me to be really tempted, though. ;)

Thanks all for replying as regard to costs. I think i will fly my lab since 7 days is too long. I'd rather have him 8-10 hours and hopefully he should be fine as he is a young(2 years) lad! :)

Good luck with your move.

Thanks!

If it helps, my dog walked out of the animal reception centre like nothing had happened. He was a bit confused by the public transport system, but that was all the adjustment he needed. (He's 7.)

Hi  equestrianerd

Thanks, it does helps, because i did have second thoughts about flying him and now after hearing you out and some others too, i definitely will fly him.

Which flight did you fly your dog with and how big is your dog? Did you have any problems finding a property considering you had a dog? Is there anything that we can do from here that would help solve the problem of finding a property that allows dogs to live in?

My dog is big, he is a lab( 2 years) but is 80 lbs. He is a very good dog even though he acts like a puppy still and very very friendly. My dog is going to come in September this year and I will reach there July end and start looking for a place.

Thanks for any input.

I flew my dog and cat via BA from DC to Heathrow. I think I paid $2,279 (it was definitely between $2,200 and $2,300).

I called about 50 people about properties and got a ton of "your cat is fine, I might consider a small dog, but not a big dog". I was looking at flatshares, so I don't know if it's easier without dealing with other tenants. Of the 50, I found 3 that were willing to consider my boys, and luckily my flatmate is awesome and really likes my pets, and my landlord's cool with it too. It took about a month to find a place.

I'm not sure what I'd recommend as far as paving the way...if you rent now, a letter from your landlord about you/your dog as good tenants might help. I think a lot of places just don't want to deal with the hassle of pets, and/or the noise of dogs.

Oh, and my boy's a lab/shepherd and is about 60lbs.

Thanks for replying, i think it gives me a pretty good idea of the time frame. I would be renting a flat preferably a house with a garden so lets see how it would be.

BA gave me a quote of 2070 for 1 dog but i think my dog is big and so its more expensive. I also checked with Virgin Atlantic and might fly him with them. They said about 1900. I live in Va so i will be flying from IAD to Heathrow.

Where abouts did you look for a flat? Just want to get an idea. I will be looking in south east london.

Keep in mind that VA's quotes (for me, anyway) didn't include fees on the UK end, which ended up being about £300. On the other hand, they'll apparently give you 1,000 frequent flyer miles for your pet flying, which could be cool.

I looked in zones 1-2 for flats, and am now living near Old Street with a park across the street (which is great with the dog).

Yes, i am aware of the charges(bummer!), Virgin guys did tell me about those.

Thank you so much for all the info, it is a big help in making so many decisions! How did your boys do in the flight, (i mean in terms of peeing/pooping) cuz of what i know we have to check them in 4 hours prior to flight time and then it takes a couple of hours at the animal reception centre. That along with the flight time would be around 14-15 hours of no walking at all. Were they okay?

Thanks again :)
