Travel health insurance for a US person in Europe
« on: April 10, 2010, 12:40:45 AM »
Hello!

The other half (the USC) is currently living with me in London on a fiancee visa, and I'm whisking her away on a surprise visit to Europe.

As far as I can tell, most travel insurance companies will only insure "British citizens", or British residents, and thus she wouldn't be covered under their policies.

Can anyone here recommend any companies that can help? preferably ones that can also deal with a pre-existing health condition...

Thanks ;)

Andrew

As I have said before regarding car insurance, this applies to any insurance, IMO. I recommend going to an insurance broker rather than a website. Talking to a real human may allow to account for any additional information you have to provide and the insurance can be better tailored to your needs. May be more expensive premiums but you will be getting a more accurate service.

I did a lot of research into this and came up with very little.  I'd been living for a few years in Japan, and then had come to Britain on holiday for six month, and hadn't even thought about travel insurance.  I didn't even qualify as an American resident, let alone a UK resident.

http://www.worldnomads.com/ was pricey, but in their FAQs said that you could purchase their policies if you'd already started your trip.

I ended up taking out a year-long expat policy with http://www.sevencorners.com/, which didn't cover lost baggage, delayed flights, etc. but was better suited to my needs.  They had a travel insurace as well, which I didn't qualify for.

You can get travel insurance with STA Travel if you are under 65 and have been in the UK for 3 months or more - you don't have to hold a specific visa or be a UK permanent resident to buy their insurance :) - http://www.statravel.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/uk_division_web_live/hs.xsl/travel-insurance.htm

Virgin insurance was great with me

Also, I'm not positive for fiances, but most people who are eligible for the NHS (residents) are eligible to use the European EHIC for medical purposes
I've never gotten food on my underpants!
Work permit (2007) to British Citizen (2014)
You're stuck with me!
