Odd question taking a boat to the USA?
« on: April 18, 2010, 12:24:33 PM »
Has anyone taken a ship from the UK to the USA rather then flying? I am looking for information on where to check for ticket prices, ports of leaving and entry..time schedule of the length of time it will take to sail from the UK to USA. Know this probably sounds odd,but I have a friend who wants to go to the USA and refuses to fly,so taking a ship is the next best thing to check out. Thanks to anyone who knows this information or has done this.

Royal Caribbean, Crystal, MSC, Celebrity, NCL, Princess, Silversea and Holland America also have transatlantic cruises from the UK to the US between now and the end of the year.  You can do a search on http://www.choosingcruising.co.uk/ (that's just the first Google search result; there are tons of others).

I went from the UK to the US on the QM2 (Cunard) a couple of years ago. It took six nights to get there. (I returned by plane.)

So which did you prefer, between the two modes of travel?

I have always wanted to travel by freighter, just for the experience. It can be much cheaper - I hear - but takes a bit longer and the amenities are not as good, again so they say.

Here is a website:

Hey you get to sit and eat at the Captains table each night.

I believe it is more expensive to go by freighter. Doesn't make sense and of course it would vary from one company to another.

They are two completely different experiences.

The plane is to get you from Point A to Point B quickly.

The ship is a holiday in itself.

The only problem with the ship is that it takes so long to get where you are going that you have to reduce the amount of time you spend in the place you are visiting (assuming that you don't have unlimited holiday time).

Also, if you take the ship both ways, there are no limits on how much luggage you can carry on.
