Babywearing rave for any new Mums or Mums to be
« on: April 19, 2010, 09:28:30 AM »
My son was such a horrible clingy baby (oh but how fabulous he is now) and when I had Immi I swore I was going to try babywearing...so my friend has lent me 3 slings. One is a wraparound (haven't tried that yet) one is a pouch (Will wait until Immi is older) and the third one, well, I have well and truly fallen in love with the RING SLING!!!  What a brilliant invention...I am currently sat at the computer with a well and truly fast asleep girl attached to me and I have managed to drink a cup of coffee! I pop her into the sling and take Noah to school, by the time I come home, boom, morning nap initiated!

Anyway, if you are a new mother or mother to be, I would highly recommend that you try a sling or a ring sling (not a baby bjorn...) they are so wonderful. I made a cake with her in the sling last week!!! I am loving it!

Storchenwiege wrap around!  Brilliant and beautiful colors.

I love mine as well, and actually usually found I was too warm walking around outside with it on (esp. as baby gets bigger) but around the house I could just wear a tank top and the sling and could do everything!

I had a wrap around sling and while it took some practice getting her in it was brilliant.  When she was teeny-weeny naps in there were the best.  We used it at the airport for trip home until she was about 7 months.  After that she was just too heavy for me and seemed to prefer the buggy.

Babywearing rocks! I used a ring sling when my son was younger. When he was about one year old I started using a Connecta which we find really comfy. He loves to ride in the Connecta on our backs even now at almost 22 months!

I totally recommend babywearing!  It was a life saver for me.  I went with the Peanut Shell ones.  All one piece, easy to slip on, slip baby in and take off with baby still sleeping.  It was invaluable for school runs and the like, as I could evem wear my raincoat over the sling and still have my hands free for the other two with crossing roads, etc.

My newest Facebook photo is of my ring sling :).  We also love our mei tai, but unfortunately it's fleece-lined and the weather's getting too warm!  Want to get a wrap one as well for the coming months :).

Before anyone asks, Baby Bjorns (and similar mass-market baby carriers) are generally not recommended by the baby-wearing community as they don't hold the baby in the optimum/most comfortable position for mom (back pain) and baby (spinal positioning).  http://www.continuum-concept.org/reading/spinalStress.html - I've never owned or tried one, so I'm only reporting anecdotally here.  Soft-structured carriers are the best (wrap-style, mei tai and ring sling are the main 3 types).

http://www.slingmeet.org.uk is a great place to find your local sling meet to attend to try-before-you-buy! :)

I love the idea of babywearing and even got a couple of slings to use when my son was born, but unfortunately he absolutely HATED being in any of them. He is "nosy" (for lack of a better word), hated the confining aspect of swaddling and whatnot and always had to have a view of what was going on. Slings never satisfied him at all :(  However, he insisted on being held constantly.

We had better luck with the Bjorn when he got older. I loved the hand's free aspect of baby carriers and he loved being able to see everything.

I hope that if we have another baby I'll have one that is more open to babywearing in the beginning. It's an awesome concept if your little one is open to it.  :D

I carried DS in the sling until he was almost 4.  I carried him lying down as a newborn, facing in, then facing out, then supported hip and then on my back.  It was invaluable when we went out for walks and he inevitably got too tired and wanted to be carried.  I hate piggy backing  but with the sling, it was great.

I have 2 freedom slings and only used one of them. Haven't used it for a while but I'm actually in the market for a Moby D or similar. She is 17 months now but still only weighs 19 pounds.

The slings are a lifesaver. I could breastfeed her in it and nobody every knew....well unless my father in law asked my husband what I was doing and then he would announce it.  Anyway, love it for it.

I LOVE babywearing! My son has loved it since I first put him in a ring sling at 3 days old. :)

Since it is warmer though, and our particular ring sling is quite heavy fabric (so just too warm for summer... and too warm for even spring), I have a soft structured buckle carrier that I absolutely ADORE. It's a Beco Butterfly II. A bit price-wise, but love it so much. And he really loves it too. He's only 13 weeks but loves watching the world when we go for walks, and also loves to be able to snooze, when he gets tired, against me while husband and I continue to enjoy the walk. :)

I love babywearing and DD loves it when I put DS in the baby carrier.  She asks me to do it when we go places.   ;D

I have a ring sling and an Ergo baby carrier that I use and love.  I LOVE my Ergo I bought it for DS as with DD I used a Baby Bjorn Sport (the one with the lower back support), but must say I find the padding and back support support system is superior on the Ergo especially since DS is nearly half the weight of DD and he's only 9 weeks old!   :o

We bought a Premaxx baby bag about a week after the girls were born as Izzie always wants to be held and carried around. It's been very helpful. We have a couple of bjorn type slings as well but they're still too small to use those.

I've seen that there are slings which support carrying twins but with my back, I daren't try it.

I know a lady who goes to the slingsmeet in Leeds. To be honest, however, it sounds all very boring. She said that they really only ever talk about slings. Surely you could talk about everything you know about slings in the first meet. What would you talk about at the next one? I passed on her invite.
There are two things in life for which we are never truly prepared:  twins.

Weird - at the sling meet I went to, it seemed like they talked about everything BUT slings!  Lots of general baby/mom chat.  Must be different whichever one you go to.

Thats what I find at most babygroups, today I went to one and we talked about sleeping and c-sections mostly. I really enjoyed it! I quite fancy going to a Slingmeet and hopefully there will be one near me soon!
