Neti Pot?
« on: April 21, 2010, 09:27:48 AM »
Hey all,

Have any of you used a neti pot and found relief from it? Or nasal syringes?

I have horrendous sinus problems, and they're just getting worse as I get older. I've gone through enough Otrivine in the past three years to bankroll a third world country. It isn't healthy, and I'd like to find a better alternative for relief.

I'd love to hear from some of you who use such a device.

I tried to find one in my area and no one has them.  They are much easier to get in the US, but I know my mother has found them very useful for her allergies.

I was just recommending a neti pot to a co worker this morning. They are great. I haven't been able to find one over here and I keep forgetting to get one when I'm in the states.

I have seen independent health food/supplement stores carry them.

I have seen them in the store but I have never picked one up.  I have sinus blockage all the time due to allergies, and so does my 3 year old.  Can he have something like this too.  Anyone ever tried it on their children.  Does it sting or anything, it just looks so uncomfortable pouring something up your nose.

The main thing is that it's very tricky for it to go in just right, instead of down your throat (which causes a gag reflex for me! Fun fun!) Might be difficult for a child to do it right.

I never used one (thankfully I don't have sinus problems), but we used to sell them at my old job in the US.  People swore by them.  A couple good pointers were:  Use it while in the shower (it can be messy!) and the second one was use it daily at the time of day that you are usually *less* congested (either morning or night), that way there is a better chance for the solution to get where it needs to go rather than be blocked.

My wife will thank you for that suggestion, since I would have tried it over the sink.

I do it over the sink, because I want to blow my nose immediately after. (and in between 'sides'.) I can't imagine doing that in the shower! *yuck!*

When I think of neti pots I can't help thinking of George on Six Feet Under.

My mom swears by it, and she just sent me one.

I'll post a review when I've used it.   ;D
