Who's getting married in 2010?
« on: April 26, 2010, 03:56:35 PM »
Ok I can't believe I'm the only one planning a wedding around here...  ;)

I'll start:

Us
I'm the American, he's the Brit. But as you can see from my sig, I've done it all backward and lived here for years and got my citizenship and NOW we're getting married! We bought a giant Dutch barge together three years ago so money is tight and boat renovations are pressing but we're surrounded by the best neighbours anyone could ever imagine. By the time we get married, we'll have been engaged for 2.5 years, though we were supposed to be married Sept 2009 but had to move it back by a year when I got really sick (luckily Bletchley Park were incredibly human about it and we didn't forfeit our deposit, which made being in a hospital bed on what should've been my wedding day slightly less crappy). So we are RARING to go now!

Details
We're getting married 18 September 2010 at Bletchley Park (near Milton Keynes) for the ceremony and the reception. We're having 85 guests plus a mandatory creche for the under-10s.

We're having a US reception the Saturday after (25 September 2010) at the Lancaster Arts Hotel (John J Jeffries) in Lancaster, PA for about 60-70 people.

Progress report
The venues are booked, broad meal choices have been chosen.
Guest lists have been tweaked with input from the parents.
I'm midway through sewing the bridesmaids dresses (I'm not starting on my gown til July).
We've given notice at our local registrars and booked a registrar at Milton Keynes (again).
We've commissioned an artist to draw "cartoon us" to use on our invites and wedding website (domain already bought!), and that should be done in the next few days.
We're in negotiations with a baker for our cupcakes.
We've just started putting together our rather complicated registry list.
Lavender bushes for confetti have been transplanted; potted flowers for the tables has been assigned to the fMIL.

I'm not going to start a list of what's left to do or it'll start freaking me out...

Who else is getting hitched this year?? C'mon, let's share so I'm not forced to sign up to some wedding site full of batsh*t crazy bridezillas to get my fix!  :P

I'm not getting married anytime soon, but I am the maid of honor for a wedding in late May.  I still don't have my dress (I'm the only one in the bridal party) so maybe I could post some photos of ideas for things on here before I pass them on to my bridezilla.  I can wear whatever I want, but since she has a black sash on her dress I figure I'll wear a short black dress and I'm thinking something halter.  I really need to pick something by next week, so I can order it and not freak the bride out.  It's an outdoor wedding in California in late May so, cool is best.  I'm thinking a black halter style would be nice, and I'd prefer to spend under a hundred bucks.

This one is pretty perfect, but out of price range cause it has the word wedding in the description.

I like this one, but I think it may not be wedding-y enough.

Help!  I'm going to go shopping this weekend, but I want to pick something and then show the bride, as she is crazed with plans and I don't want to add another stress.  I'm a 6 or an 8 (US) and a little busty (full D cup).

And congrats on the nuptials ladies, SP your day(s) sound fabulous and well deserved!

You are right, the J Crew one is absolutely gorgeous but pricy.

Have you tried David's Bridal? Sometimes they have really nice dresses. Or Macy's?

I have only looked briefly at Macy's, I plan on doing a good thorough check this weekend when I'm up in Sacramento.  I looked at David's Bridal, but it seems like whenever you insert the word "bride" or "wedding" the price goes up exponentially.  I wish I were a better seamstress like Squirellypoo, I'd just make myself something nice.  I just really can't afford to spend more than $100 on a dress, with all the other wedding things I need to buy.

SP, how long is it taking you to make each dress- and how many are you making?

I really like both the dresses you linked to. I don't see any problem with the Delia's one - I think it's got some really nice details that the J Crew one doesn't have, like the pleating around the neckline. My only worry would be that it might be too short - did your bride give you a length of dress to aim for?

It's kinda hard to say how long it's taking because most of the time is waiting around for them for muslin fittings (and we even live in the same city!). The real time consuming part is going to be the silk satin pleated waistband/cummerbund things because you have to hand baste them all before pressing to get a nice result. But the rest of the dresses are in silk jersey so they'll take like maybe 2 hours each max on my overlocker and coverstitch. Part of the reason why I told them they must be knit dresses. ;) That, and because I knew I'd have to make them months in advance and their weights might fluctuate a bit.

I'm having a Man of Honour and two Bridsmaids, so I'm only making two dresses. You can see the dress pattern and the colours they chose here. We're not having "wedding colours" because I've seen WAY too many friends get obsessive over whether shade A is closer to THEIR colour than Shade B or vice versa and that's way too nuts. I'd rather just pick things we like and make us happy.

Yay, SP, I'm so glad you're finally able to plan your wedding!

Well, this time last year I was saying I was getting married in 2010, but I'm not.  But that's all fine with me!  :)

Planning sounds like a lot of fun and it looks like you have almost everything sorted out.

I am getting married on July 1st at a registrars office in Scottland but we are not having a church ceremony or a party. We decided that instead of having a party, we will save the money for two round the world tickets and travel the world for a year. Of course this won't happen for a couple more years but still exciting :)

Congrats and hope you have an amazing wedding!

Oh wow that sounds amazing!! I have a friend who (at the age of 30-something) he and his wife sold their house, put their stuff into storage and the cats with his parents, and took an adult "gap year" to travel around the world. They still talk about it 5 years later and haven't regretted it for a second. They didn't have any problems getting back onto the housing ladder (they wanted to move anyway!) or getting into their careers again when they came back, either.

I'm thoroughly jealous!

I absolutely love the idea of using fresh lavender for the confetti! I will totally have to steal that one for my "one day".... No plans as of yet!

Squirrelypoo, I'm also very happy you are finally able to plan for your wedding! I was supposed to go visit Bletchley Park last summer, but we ran out of time.

I ended up finding a black dress at Dress Barn (um never had been but that place rocks!) that is racerback, long enough, doesn't overshadow the bride with boobage and was only 60 bucks!  My mom was the one who ended up finding it (of course, momma is always right!) and the bride loves it.  I love the lavender idea SP!
