Good Pedometers?
« on: April 30, 2010, 03:14:11 PM »
OK, the thought just occurred to me that it might be most beneficial to buy a good little pedometer, preferably with a distance calculator and calorie counter. Does anyone have any that they could recommend? Thanks!

I have a good Garmin one, but off the top of my head, I don't know the model.  But I think most Garmin products are pretty good?

Jewlz, do you have either a nano or an ipod touch/iphone? If so I would highly recommend this: http://store.nike.com/index.jsp?country=GB&lang_locale=en_GB#l=shop,pdp,ctr-inline/cid-300/pid-132956/pgid-161933

You put the sensor on your shoe, and if you have a nano, there's a receiver you plug into the end of the nano (ipod touch/iphone have this built in.) You can set it to measure distance, time, calories... And it has an online log feature. You just set up an account on nikeplus.com and whenever you connect your ipod to itunes, it uploads the info automatically. Lots of cool features. I love mine and use it most every day!

Oh cool! I have an older generation iPod, but I'm sure it should work. I'll look into it. Thanks!

Yeah, as long as it's a nano, it will work. I still have a 1st gen nano from like 5 years ago. I got my nike+ the day it came out! My nano (and nike+) is still going strong. :)

No, mine is a 60g one I bought for DH about 2 1/2 years ago. He never uses it, so I guess it was a good purchase for me.  :P Hopefully it would still work, though. Does it have to be an iPod Touch, though. Mine isn't.

I have a polar watch for fitness and some of the watches have pedometers. I really recommend polar. We have also had good service when they have needed maintenance. These watches can monitor heart rate, calories burned, help you set and maintain targets for exercise / calories burned, assess fitness via VO2 max, depending on what model you buy.

I believe the FA20 has a pedometers:

Do you have a shop like Up & Running where you live? They are quite helpful on what products may work for you and you could always wait for sales. If you are a student, Up & Running also has a 10% discount.

Will the sensor work with any shoe or do you have to have Nikes?

Oooh... I'd love something like that, but it's pretty far out of my budget, I'm afraid.  :-[ Maybe someday... I tend to be wishy washy about working out, so I'd have to stick with it a while to convince DH I needed something that expensive.

You don't have to use nikes. There are little pockets, etc you can attach to your laces to use the sensor.

Oh, and Jewlz, it has to be a nano, or touch/iphone. Not sure why, but it just doesn't work with other models....

That's exactly what we did. We've been going to the gym for about 4 years and only bought these watches in the last year or so as we felt unable to part with such sums of money without showing commitment.  :)

But we batter them and use them all the time. Well, not for the last few weeks for me (scared to go back to the gym when I am up for it), but if you ever get to a stage where you feel you are consistently working out, I can say they truly do the business.   :D

Ah... too bad. Well, it's ok because sometimes when the tide is high and crazy I prefer to listen to the waves crash instead of my iPod, it really depends on my mood.  :) I guess I will just find a cheaper model that works well and start with that until I get more into a habit of walking more. Once I've been doing it consistently for a year or so, maybe I can then splurge on one of those watches with the heart rate monitor and calorie counter, etc. without feeling bad about the money I'm spending.  ;)
