Reporting Child Benefit on 1040
« on: May 05, 2010, 01:51:26 PM »
I presume that I report UK Child Benefit on Line 21 of the 1040, as Other Income.  Is this correct, and do I just write UK Child Benefit on the dotted line on Line 21?

You'll also want to report it on the 1116 as foreign source general limitation income so it qualifies for foreign tax credits.

If there is a child trust fund annual form 3520 and 3520-A filing may additionally be prudent.

Thanks to you both.

Guya, is Form 1116 mandatory?  I don't actually owe any tax, so I don't need the tax credits.

No, 1116 is not mandatory. However, how is it that you don't owe any tax? Are you taking the foreign earned income exclusion? By using the foreign tax credit instead of foreign earned income exclusion I become eligible to claim the $1000 per child per year Additional Child Tax Credit. Not sure if that would apply to your situation.

I'm a stay at home mom, so I have no earned income, only the Child Benefit and the interest on bank accounts.  My son is a "qualifying child" for the Child Tax Credit.
That, together with the fact that the bank interest has not added up to much, I think means that I don't actually owe any tax.  Have I missed something?  Please let me know if you think there's something wrong with this.

No, doesn't sound like anything wrong at all. I just hadn't realised you don't have any earned income.
