I did the cabbage soup diet and lost more than 20 pounds.  It stayed off for over a year, then I went through a bad stretch and put it all back on again, and when I tried cabbage soup again I only lost 5 pounds, which soon returned.  I've considered trying it again, but it's really an unpleasant experience and the first time I tried it, I was feeling lightheaded by the fifth day and had to leave work early and have a little cheat because I felt so faint.  Still, it can an effective way to lose weight fast.

Okay, I hope this doesn't come off inconsiderately...

But for the last four years, I have dieted and exercised off 108 pounds. And boy, have I learned A LOT. And what I would say to you is this...if you want to lose 5-7 pounds FAST, then go for it. Diets like this are great for a big event coming up quickly that you want to lose a few pounds for.

But if you want to lose it, and keep it off, even though it may take you longer, my advice is ALWAYS this: "Don't do anything you don't intend to keep up for the rest of your life." Unless you're going to eat soup for the rest of your life, you're pretty much guaranteed to gain back what you've lost when you stop the soup diet.

Like I said, not trying to come off as a know-it-all, but if I could keep others from making some of the mistakes I did, I want to speak up. :)

i understand what you are saying. I am just under 8 stone now.And ideally, I want to be about 7 stone. Luckily, I'm not an over-eater and not a big fan of sugary sweets. My only downfall i have is i usually have fastfood (mcdonalds) in the afternoon. But I have willpower to keep all the weight off is this soup diet thing works. And not eating fastfood anymore. I bought a pair of jeans one size too small (size 6) and I made a goal of fitting in them by the time summer comes along.

You don't sound like you need to do the soup diet to me! Heck, I'm sitting exactly at 9 stone (126 pounds), and I've been that way for about a year now. At 5'4", I'd much rather be closer to 8 stone, but my body just is happy where it's at. Unfortunately for me (and fortunately for my fiance who's of the mind that "a woman should be a little soft"), despite eating clean 90% of the time and exercising 6 days a week, that number just isn't going to budge unless I resort to extreme measures. And I'm just not willing to do that.

That being said, soup really is a good diet food. I make homemade soups usually twice a week. Anyway, not to derail...I hope it works for you and you get the results you want. A size 6 UK, I'd love to be able to pull that off! :)

I'm with the rest - it's good for an event, just not for the long term.

Also, watch out for the sodium!  I get into soup kicks for a while, and I love it, and then my ankles swell up like nobody's business cause I start retaining too much water.

You say you want to lose weight and get more fit.

If you want to get fit you are going to need to eat more protein to build up your muscles.

I did the cabbage soup diet when I was 11 or 12. I lost 40 lbs in a month and kept it off until I was 18.

Now, I'm doing what Carrie does. 6 days a week exercising and eating better.

You've got pretty good advice here. I'd run with it!

Doubtful. The cabbage is the most important part of the diet!

What's the nutritional information of the soup? That really doesn't sound healthy to me. Plus, those things are generally way too high in sodium.

As others have said, you're much better off eating healthy food and doing some exercise.

Agree with sweetpeach & with chary.

You might lose weight temporarily drinking only soup, but there's nothing fit about it.  To be fit, muscle needs protein and exercise.

The point of the cabbage soup is that it is a) homemade, and made to a specific recipe, so no salt or fat added, and b) negative calorie, as in you burn more calories digesting the roughage than you absorb from it.  Cup-a-soup, as others have said, is high in sodium and I suspect also in fat and calories, plus it contains no proper vegetables.  So whilst you might lose weight simply because you are only eating soup, it's not the same thing.  Also, the cabbage soup diet allows you to eat some other things as well, different things for each day.  You should google it and have a look.  If you really can't handle cabbage, another robust leafy green should do, kale for example.  The important thing is that the soup should be full of vegetables and with no added fat or salt.

As I recall from previous posts by the original poster she has some unrealistic and by that I mean unhealthly ideas about what she should weigh given her height and accepted bmi.
