Kettles in the US?
« on: August 16, 2004, 01:55:01 PM »
I've become addicted to my kettle since living here. I remember, on first arriving, thinking "Oh, how clever, why haven't I seen one of these in the US before?" - - - can some one tell me if they actually *are* available in the US, and if so where? Or should I bring a UK one with me and use an adaptor? And by kettle, I mean the English kind, the plug-in-the-wall-ang-get-boiling-water-in-2-seconds kind...

I've seen them quite a few places while home on holiday...some are quite dear, but others are reasonable.  Target stores have a couple brands, I bought one for Mom (she's a kettle-convert now) for $13 on sale (reg $20) and it works GREAT.  She really likes it, but now wants to upgrade to the $30 model...the only difference is it has a whistle that goes off when it boils...the only thing she misses from her stove-top kettle...

My mum had an electric kettle when I was a teenager.  So yes, they are available, but perhaps not as readily available as in the UK

My mum currently uses ones, the brand is Krups and she bought it at Fortunoff.  I am sure they are available elsewhere.

Target - I know that Walgreens & Albertsons have carried them from time to time, as well.

Also try Crate & Barrel. Saw them last time I was home (March). Cool colors.  :)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

You can get some great tea-related stuff at Bodum (http://www.bodum.com)- I bought my Dad a really nice electric kettle for his birthday!

Ooooooo- I can tell you're just aching to start your homemaking and nesting in the US!  ;D

Soooo happy for you, Sara!

Thanks Jenny! :) And yep - I'm hoping to do a bit of online shopping, send it to my mom, and have it waiting for us when we get there! New shiny toys!!!

When I was there in April I went to target and got my grandma one. She's totally adicted now. I think it cost about $20. So no worries - we're in luck! I couldnt live without mine now either.

I have an electric kettle which I got at Macy's, but I've also purchased them as gifts for people from Target.  I can't be bothered to put a kettle on the stove - the electric kettle is so convenient!

The Bodum stuff is also all available on amazon.com...

I'm glad that you can get electric ones in the U.S.  I can't be without one now.

When my DH and I first started dating in the U.S. and he began spending a lot of time at my apartment, I didn't even have the stove top type of kettle.  I just told him to boil the water in a sauce pan for his tea!  :o   Can you imagine?!

He scoffed at my uncivilized ways and bought me a proper whistling stove top kettle!  Although I've now progressed to the electric type, I still have that kettle and could never part with it!

Oh the horror! ;)

When I saw Muriel's Wedding in a UK cinema, when Muriel's Mum puts the cup of hot water in the microwave to make tea the ENTIRE audience gasped!   :)
