Hello from Seattle!
« on: May 07, 2010, 04:52:27 AM »
Hey everyone.  I'm glad I stumbled upon this sight I think it will be a big help.  My girlfriend and I have been tossing around the idea of moving to London, unfortunately we have no idea where to start.

I work as a busser at Red Robin, and she will be graduating in June with an Associates Degree.  How do we find jobs?  Lodging?  I also want to study to be a nurse so I am wondering if there are good further education schools.  Is there automatic admission into schools, like it works in American Community Colleges.  What type of health programs does London have to offer?

That's just a start.  I'd appreciate any advice you want to throw my way...thanks!
Have a good day.

-Dave and Serah

Welcome to UKY from a fellow Seattleite (I don't think I spelled that right).

I'm sure that someone will come along to help you with your questions. Looks like studying could be your best option to move over the pond. Unfortunately, that only covers you. Perhaps your girlfriend can look into BUNAC http://www.bunac.com/

HTH! Welcome again!

Hi & welcome to UKY! I am from Vancouver, BC and have spent loads of time in Seattle, as I have friends there.  :)

Maybe if you post in more detail about your situation (ages, education, citizenship, any European heritage, educational / employment aspirations) in the visas section, you'll get some suggestions.   :)

Hello and welcome!

Have a peruse of the visa section.  Most of us are spouses of a Brit, but we do have some very active members who came over on work permits and some students.  It can be a bit tricky to find a way over, so looking through might give you a basic knowledge and feel free to ask any questions.   :)

Definitely take a look at the visa section, but you and your girlfriend cannot take up employment without a visa and unless one of you is a British citizen, has skills which are on the shortage list, have a masters degree or can qualify for citizenship in another EU country its going to be quite difficult for you.  People cannot just move to the UK because they think it sounds fun.

The other option that works for some is school, but do keep in mind that it can be prohibitively expensive for international students.
