BBC just announced - official hung parliament
« on: May 07, 2010, 09:44:02 AM »
According to the announcement just now on BBC, we do have officially a hung parliament - mathematically impossible for the Tories to have the majority they need.

Still holding out hope for Lab/Lib coalition.  :-\\\\

Yup, I'm glued to the BBC, too... But since I can't vote, I'm trying not to 'take sides.'

Interesting to see all this history in the making!

This would be a success to me, it terms of more aligned political policies, including if that means combining with 'other'.

I am annoyed already at the Conservatives seeming to be yipping like lapdogs about how they have 'won': when you add up Conservatives vs Lab/Lib/Other, it seems even stevens, i.e. the public want compromise and cooperation to promote stability. Stop whining and work together, however that looks.  ::)

This.  And I don't think it looks like Cameron's Botox face.  :P

I'm stunned that the queues at the polling stations were so bad that hundreds of people were turned away at 10pm and were denied a chance to vote.

Well one thing is certain - British politics is about to get a whole lot more interesting, and possibly extremely painful with the economic crisis looming on the horizon.  One pundit was predicting we'll have another election before the year is out...

Not saying he will, but I reckon the shine will come right off Nick Clegg if he sells out to the Tories.

Yeah, they did it for Leeds Council.  Clegg will then be the Ralph Nader of British politics, IMHO - not good.  :-\\\\

I hope he thinks about it - we should ring him up & tell him!  ;)  He really should be careful particularly if there's prospect of another election before the year is out.

He'll be making a speech any minute now, so hopefully we'll find something out.

So interesting that Clegg really is the pivotal power player just now!

I am far from a British politics expert, but here's my take:

If Labour gets in with a coalition, cuts and measures to bring down the massive debt will reflect badly on Labour and the coalition they'd need to assemble.  On top of the right wing press playing this as Brown (or replacement PM) camping out in 10 Downing and stealing the election.

If the Lib Dems support a Tory minority government with no coalition, this may tamper some of the most horrible cuts, but many supporters (including myself) would question future support of the party.  The Tory press would blame the "loony Left" for unpopular measures dealing with the deficit and the coming out of recession, and if Cameron had been given an outright majority of seats, they could have implemented better policy.  Of course, even if Cameron had won an outright majority, things that they did that harmed the country would not be the Tories' fault even if they could admit that harm was going on...

Labour supporting electoral reform now...too little too late.
