Not impressed with Clegg's statement, but I think he's really between a rock and a hard place on this one.

I hate to say it, but I think Clegg will work with the Tories.

I think I might just go back to bed & pull the duvet over my head now.  :P

Yup. Time to emigrate?

If the left leaves Britain, the right might actually have a majority and not just manage a third of the votes with a majority saying they'd be dismayed if their main party's leader became PM.

If the Conservatives form a minority government it will mean an election soonish, right?

I don't know, I think Clegg would be honoring the voters' choice with the majority of votes for the Conservatives and I think that's admirable, and perhaps a move that will raise the LibDem vote in the future.

Actually, the majority were for not-Conservatives, but I do think he's sticking to his principles whilst pointing out that the system needs to be reformed.

Agreed the majority is for 'other-than-Conservative' with all the different parties comprising that.  :-\\\\

MLG, I can understand why you'd look at emigration in light of funding cuts and elimination of public services, etc.  I think I'm here for the duration - however it might be.  Never say never though, right?

Perhaps. I think we have to see what they decide on and how the negotiations end up. It's a waiting game ...

Oh, it was Mr MLG who raised it, from a job prospect point of view for both of us. I think he thinks Canada could hold more options at the moment. We shall see. I hate the idea of leaving home, even if it also means the niceness of going home, which would also be nice, IYKWIM.  Who knows?  :-\\\\  Besides, nothing is forever or written in stone.

It's another way to look at it, I suppose. I just don't see, policy wise, how this is sustainable or stable.

I don't see how the Tories will consent for any sort of election reform, apart from that which exclusively benefits the Tories.  So if Clegg sides with them, he will be going against his party's key platform.  How would anyone believe anything he says from thereon?

Are there other countries that have election processes like this? It seems to me a very complicated way of doing things and forming an opinion based on the American election processes you're more familiar with just doesn't work.

To be fair, we're not the only ones finding the system ridiculous.  Brits themselves are.

From what I understand, the UK is the only one with this exact system.  The Aussies, for instance, have FPTP, but they also can rank their choices which makes it a lot different than here in the UK.

The majority were also for not-Labour, and not-Green and not-Lib Dem, etc.

The electoral college system isn't perfect either.

Don't Israel and Germany both have something like this? Some countries seem much more likely to have coalition or minority governments in general though from what I understand and for the UK it's unusual. I have to admit, I'm having a hard time getting my head around the whole thing. Methinks I need to go get Parliamentary Government 101 and start at the beginning!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
