Yeah, that's the thing - I wonder if it's really true, or if people are just remembering the past with their rose-tinted spectacles?  :)

This, I think.  People always remember the extremes, the best and the worst.  ;)

I think up here, we've had 2 days where it was in the low 60ºFs. That's it ,summer done.  :P
Its nice and chilly today, about 40ºF.  Brrrrrr....  I woke up last night in the middle of the night very cold.

ETA: It's hail raining right now  :-\\\\
It makes you really appreciate nice, warm days though.

Second the suggestions of getting some cardigans for your sundresses. Otherwise you may only get to wear them a few times a year, unless you travel to somewhere hot and warm.

If it makes you feel any better, the weather where I am here still in the States (Ohio) is FREEZING this week. Last night we had temps in the 30Fs with a high only in the 40s today. And it's May. Grr. May!  :o Definitely not sundress weather here either.

I wear sundresses every year. Even last summer which was arguably one of the most miserable summers in recent memory. But June and September were downright hot! I find you're much more likely to get good hot summer weather in June and September than in July or August. That's my experience, though.

Six years into living here, I'd say there are about two weeks a year in which a sundress may be worn. The interesting thing is that you'll have no idea when it will happen. April, May and June seem to have some nice days, and then it gets really miserable and clears up by September to give you an absolutely gorgeous autumn. A nice summer's day means it reaches 70 for a couple of hours in the afternoon so you get to remove your cardigan and feel the sunshine before the clouds return. The previously mentioned actual warm days may reach 78 or 80 as it did for four or five days last year, whereupon the media will announce a heat wave and advise everyone to drink plenty of water and wear light clothes. Most British people will be on this, as they remove their coats in early April, the beginning of British summer, and put them back on in September as it actually starts to warm up.

It's nearly impossible to prepare yourself for the utterly weird weather of Britain. I knew when I moved here it would be bad, but I didn't realize it would be bad nearly all the time except for a few weeks in spring and the entire fall. But who knows, maybe this year will be one of those mythic ones that actually receives some warm weather. Apparently the summer of 2003 was hot. In July. The feat was repeated in 2006 as well, but that summer I managed to go to Spain so I never saw it!

On the bright side, if you ever are lucky enough to encounter a warm day and you are someplace nice, like coastal Devon or something, you will think you've never seen anyplace so lovely in your life.

It really does depend on where you are. I spend plenty of time on the beach every summer - in a lot less than a sundress!  ;D

Apparently the summer of 2003 was hot. In July.

It was record-breakingly hot in 2003 (reached 100F in Kent - highest temperature ever recorded in the UK), but it only lasted for about 2 weeks. It was in August though (I remember because it was the week before I moved to New Mexico... and I flew out on August 18th) :).

That was a great summer! I moved over in June and it was SWELTERING! That summer I was on the beach nearly every day. Heaven!
