I quit four years ago cold turkey using forums and group help like this one here. A good place is the forum at about.com under smoking cessation. I had been trying to quit for years and at first I used all the scare tactics but I would eventually start again. So I joined a online nicotine anonymous group- there is a good one out there called the voices of nicotine recovery. I was a meeting facilitator at one point but it got to be too much for me. I did manage to stay smoke free using those methods along with all the books I could buy and journaling. Plus, I found a good hobby. When I wasn't reading my books about smoking cessation I would crochet or cross-stitch, work out on my wii fit or go for a walk. Eventually, after about 2 weeks I started to forget about smoking and after a couple of months I almost felt like I had never been a smoker at all. Another positive about using alternatives to NRTs and wellbutrin/chantix/zyban is knowing that after 72 hours, all the nicotine and its metabolites are gone from your body and the only addiction is in the mind
Unfortunately, I started smoking again this October due to all the pressure and stress and drama regarding this move. I'm still smoking here but much less and hope to quit when things settle down and we get a place of our own...Maybe we can be quit buddies!
