How demotivating, Jewlz! I hope they get more organised for your next booking!  ::)

I think we might try the Champix/Chantix/whatever its called. The nurse did say if the nausea and side effects were too much for us, she could reduce the dosage a bit and it would still be effective. I don't really want to bother with the patch or other NRT, as they haven't really helped much in the past. I'd rather go cold turkey and get the nasties out of my system quicker, but with a little help. I guess we will see how it goes in 2 weeks when we go in for our next appointment. Thanks for all the support, everyone!  :)

My friend used Chantix and had great success. She didn't have any bad side effects or weight gain, but we are all different.  Best of luck J.  :)

Thanks! The nurse said they have had good results with it here in our area.  :)

well im using patches, gum and an inhaler and im on day 4 of no smoking, having said that i am probably overdosing on nicotine replacement right now.

Just to throw something else into the mix i am hearing good things about nicobrevin, a 50 a day smoker i know who tried everything has successfully quit on Nicobrevin, and it doesnt even contain nicotine...

Whoa, man. Are you sure that's safe? I don't think you are supposed to combine all those things!  :-\\\\

The Nicobrevin looks good, but is it available in the UK? That's a New Zealand link you posted there. I haven't seen it on the NHS list. I wouldn't mind paying for it, depending on the cost, if it was available here.

I quit four years ago cold turkey using forums and group help like this one here.  A good place is the forum at about.com under smoking cessation.  I had been trying to quit for years and at first I used all the scare tactics but I would eventually start again.  So I joined a online nicotine anonymous group- there is a good one out there called the  voices of nicotine recovery.  I was a meeting facilitator at one point but it got to be too much for me.  I did manage to stay smoke free using those methods along with all the books I could buy and journaling.  Plus, I found a good hobby.  When I wasn't reading my books about smoking cessation I would crochet or cross-stitch, work out on my wii fit or go for a walk.  Eventually, after about 2 weeks I started to forget about smoking and after a couple of months I almost felt like I had never been a smoker at all.  Another positive about using alternatives to NRTs and wellbutrin/chantix/zyban is knowing that after 72 hours, all the nicotine and its metabolites are gone from your body and the only addiction is in the mind  ;)

Unfortunately, I started smoking again this October due to all the pressure and stress and drama regarding this move.  I'm still smoking here but much less and hope to quit when things settle down and we get a place of our own...Maybe we can be quit buddies!

Of course we can! We are going to set a date for a month or so from our appointment time next week, just to give ourselves time to prepare for it properly, like smoking outside instead of inside, cleaning the house and car of the smell, and cutting back in general. We are both really committed to it, so I am optimistic about it.  :)

Just an update: we started the Champix today and plan to quit one week from Monday, on 7th June. I feel slightly queasy already, but it isn't too bad yet. A cup of tea is definitely settling my stomach a bit and DH doesn't feel anything yet. But I have high hopes! We also have an appointment with the nurse again on our quit date to extend the medication once they see how its working out. And she said that many people only take half the dose if they feel nauseous and still quit successfully, so I can always take that option if it upsets my stomach too much.  :)
