First Steps Taken & Question re: Returning to US
« on: May 14, 2010, 03:20:26 PM »
Hi!

Well, I took my pooch to the vet yesterday and got her microchipped plus the rabies vaccination.  Thanks to you all, I knew much more about the process than did the vet.  He gave her a quick physical, then inserted the microchip.  The needle looked gargantuan, but my nervous girl didn't even flinch.  Then the rabies vaccination...

The vet filled out the relevant sections of the EC998 in blue ink, per my request, and put dates in the European format (day, month, year).  I am thankful I did my research and got help here, because it was truly me guiding the process.

Now, being an inveterate worrier, I have yet another question...  If things don't work out with my fiancée (horrors!), will I have to go through some similar process to get my pet back to the US?

Wishing all a sunny & bright weekend...

Cheers!
Teddy

No, you will have to prove that they have had rabies and heartworm, umm stuff (pills or whatever idk), but it isn't nearly as difficult.

I don't have a pet but others here do and I am sure someone will be along shortly.

As long as you arent going to Hawaii, and have lived in the UK for 6 months, you actually dont need any vaccinations at all.  The UK is declared free from rabies, so no vaccine is required if the dog has been in the UK for at least 6 months.

If you come back before 6 months, then you will need a rabies vaccination at least 30 days before travel to the US as well as a health certificate stating the dog is healthy enough to fly.

Thanks so much, mirrajay & bookgrl...  My fiancée also told me that dogs don't have to be licensed in the UK.  Having been owned by dogs all my life, the concept of not having to get them licensed seems mind-boggling...   :)

That is true.  I think they float around the idea of making them when people are attacked though, so it might happen.

Speaking of which, what type of dog do you have?  Some breeds are banned here, but mainly pit bulls and the like.

My doggie is a rat terrier, bookgrl.  Not yet recognized by the AKC, unless something has changed that I've missed.  If you're not familiar with rat terriers, they are much like Jack Russells in temperament.  My baby is 12yo and still acts like a pup.  She weighs about 12 lbs, has short smooth hair, tri-colored.  Had her since she was a baby and so she's the real love of my life.  Rat terriers also come in a smaller size that averages around 7 lbs and a larger size more like Jack Russells.  She's going to have to learn to "woof" with a British accent!  :)

Just confirming that on the off chance you should need or want to return to the US, it's a much less painful process.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
