If we'd given it a bit more thought when we chose names for our kids we might have avoided such R-heavy names for our sons. My husband and I pronounce their names very differently.

I'm am sure they're lovely sounding and I don't mean to discourage you at all, but just wanted to add, as an American still living in the US and having only spent a little time in the UK, I have absolutely NO IDEA how to pronounce those names.
I say that with no opinion whatsoever (obviously since I don't know what they sound like lol) just a thought about living here if it's a major concern, I doubt a whole lot of folks would know how to pronounce/spell those names.  GL!

I say go for it. Unusual name spellings are increasingly common here. There was a Siobhan on American Idol this season so Celtic names are getting popular. They'll be fine.

I have a 'common' name with an unusual spelling but I'd not change it for the world despite repeated bludgeoning!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

hello,  thanks for all of the advice. I had a chat with an old co-worker whose daughter is named Angharad, and other than having to spell it she's not had any problems. I am over thinking this, I'm sure. It's just growing up with a very unusual name has kind tainted my view (growing up in rural Minnesota couldn't have helped the name situation).

Btw for those who've asked my name is Prairie, I am older than Prairie Dawn and take credit for her character even though my parents have never met anyone associated with the muppets.

Prairie is a beautiful name!!

I like it, too!  ;D

Some of my friends in high school had names like Rainbow, Freedom, Cinnamon, and I even knew two sisters named Bhama (I think it means child of God or something in Hindi) and Prebaa (which I think is the Hindi term for a ray of sunlight that comes from behind a cloud) and these were Caucasian girls not of Eastern descent or anything. Plus I have some friends who were raised Hare Krisna and their names are Narayana (pronounced like Na-ryan), Janardana (he spells it without the A on the end now since its pronouned Ja-nar-den) and Rsi (sounds like Ree-she). Mostly the girls just thought their exotic names were sexy.  ;)

thank you. As an older teen and an adult I love my name, as a kid, well kids are cruel. I got Prairie Dog, Meadow, Little house on the Prairie, Little house, someone even once cut a house out of paper to put on me! But on the up side, I always got it right on spelling tests, it made me memorable (not such a good thing in high school) and it was a good conversation starter. Over here it doesn't have the same sort of connotations and i get 'that's pretty' more than 'were your parents hippies?' or 'what were your parents smoking when you were born'

See why I'm obsessing about names lol?

Pengi -- whatever you decide to name your child I'm sure it won't be as bad as one of my former clients...she named her son Sur Hyness  ???

I've come to love the Welsh names since moving here.  DH and I both like them a lot, but with such a decidedly English surname as Shakespeare, it just sounds funny with totally Welsh names (although we both still like Bethan and Dafydd).

We finally got it somewhat out of our systems by giving our chickens Welsh names.  ;D  So we now have hens named Myfanwy, Blodwen, and Arwen.

Eh, I think hippie-sounding names are cool (or you know, just unique names) like I was doing some paperwork once and the guy's name was Azure Sky. I just thought "how cool" instead of "WTF?"  :)

My hubby and I went through something similar to this because we both liked the name London (for a girl or a boy).  We thought it would be cool if we lived in the US...as in "Yeah my dad is British and they named me London" but thought it would be strange if we lived in the UK..."Oh wow...your parents are REAL original, aren't they?".  In the end, my hubby decided he didn't like it so it got tossed from our short list.  My advice is along with others though...name your kid what you like and don't worry about everyone else's issues with it.

Speaking as one of what felt like a bazillion Jennifers growing up... there's something to be said for uncommon names.  I think Prairie is a lovely name.

My previous comment about my cousin's name was more about it being hard for most Americans to spell/pronounce than the uncommon aspect.

But hey - name your kids what you want, what you feel suits them.
